So my goal is 80lbs in six months. I weighed 315 on 6/11. I am at 295 now one and 1/2 weeks into it. I need to hit either 205 or 24% body fat before I re-enlist back into the military. oh an im 28 and 6'1"

anyway I read that drinking a ton of water helps not only to clean you out but to speed up and maintain your metabolism. I also read somewhere else that this isnt true, water does nothing, and only drink if you are thristy. So what are the thoughts on this??????????

Water is good for you but like anything, you can over-do.

It is possible to kill yourself by drinking too much water...but it's really a lot of water before you're in danger.

Cold water does have a miniscule effect on your metabolism...your body has to heat the water to body temperature....but I don't think it's an appeciable amount.

Most of us don't drink enough water so drink when thirsty and whenever you think to have another drink of water and you should be good to go.

i drink a gallon a day. I was told i should drink half my body weight in oz. That comes to about 1 1/2 gallons 295lbs

Its been discovered the old wives tale of drink 8oz water a day is just that..a tale. Drink when your thirsty.

The drinking cold water idea is a good in theory, but Judy is right, it really has no real effect as far as burning cals go.

Holy Crap.....

I have been forcing 2 liters down me a day for NOTHING :( I have always heard that drink loads of water... drink drink drink... 2-3 liters for dieting... and I am peeing constantly.....

Thanks guys for saving me from drowning!:cheers2:

I've heard that the general guideline is 8 glasses of water a day, more if you do exercise.

And the whole 'drink when you are thirsty' thing is a bit debateable, by the time you are 'thirsty' you are already dehydrated, which is very bad for you body! You can't perform as well when doing cardio or weight training, and because your kidneys are working harder because of the dehydration your liver has to help out - meaning you do not process as much fat (Source: Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle)

Water is very important! It helps clear up your skin and helps with water retention, it helps bloating, and hydrates you so you can perform normal everyday tasks.

Once I started drinking 2L of water per day I found I had WAY more energy, and my skin started to clear up. I find on days that I don't have a lot of water I am more sluggish, tired and bloated.

Your pee should be clear - thats how you know you are getting enough water.

water magic

Hi Ionracing!
Here is some useful information for you...

In God’s creation itself, three-fourth of the universe is water and one fourth is land. In the same way there is 68% water and only 32% solid matter in our body.

Our outer body is cleansed of dirt when we bathe in water. The sameway if we supply sufficient quantity of water to the inner body every cell inside will have a thorough bath. A cleaning effect takes place inside our body.

It is an established fact that we should drink three times the quantity of water to the quantity of food we eat. That is the law of the body, that is the law of nature. On an average an adult takes 2 kgs of solid food. So he should drink nearly 5 to 6 litres of water. It’s not enough if you know how much to drink you should also know how and when to drink.

You should not drink while eating in fact it is harmful. Water dilutes the digestive juices, food remains long in the stomach and intestines and digestion becomes slow. For instance, when you grind dal for idli you add water only later. The same way you should drink water only after the food is digested completely.

How to drink water

a) Your blood and your body gets cleansed mostly by the water you drink early in the morning before breakfast. As soon as you get up, you can drink around a litre to litre and a half. You can do some exercise fifteen minutes after drinking water.

b) After exercise or after 45 to 60 minutes you should drink again the same quantity of water. The first dosage of water soaks all the waste material in water and the second dosage enables an outlet to it through urine.

You can have yet another dosage if you have a possibility. It will give a final wash to your internal body and purify your blood.

You can take solid food 20 minutes after drinking water.

c) You should again drink 3 glasses of water compulsorily half an hour before lunch.

d) After food don’t drink water for 2 hours. After that drink two glasses of water. Ever since then, till 15 minutes before taking another solid food, you can drink as much water as you can in installments.

e) Finally you should drink 3-4 glasses of water half an hour before dinner.

f) Two hours after food you should drink half to one glass of water.

Don’t entertain false notions like you urinate more, its not good for your kidneys and what not initially you may face some problems, but if you persist you can be cured of many of your minor but regular complaints like stomachache, ulcer, constipation etc. You can be cured very much faster this way than by taking medicines. Can’t you believe it? Try it for just ten days, whole heartedly and see for yourself....

Thirst shouldn't be your only indicator...

As has been said on this forum 100s of times - you should be monitoring the color of your urine - unless you've got a medical condition your urine should be pale yellow to almost clear - any darker and you're probably dehydrated

I've read in some magazines that water is found to increase our metabolic rates by nearly 30% after drinking 17 ounces of water. I'm not sure how true this is but that's not important to me I guess.

What's important is that I always keep my body hydrated and don't go into the "drink-when-you're-thirsty" habit. Because water is a natural appetite suppressant, it also cleanses out toxins and sodium from the body and fills our stomach.

For me water has been a big part of my weight loss, and a big part of my new healthy lifestyle. I almost only drink water, simply because I love it (now).

I can't prove it, but in my experince drinking alot of water (not crazy insane much) is good for weight loss.

I think I developed a bit of an oral fixation when I was overeating... water is a great replacement for this... I do it aaaaallll day long (til about 6pm, don't wanna wake up in the night!)

It feels good to have something to "cling" to almost :) dunno if that makes sense!

If you feel thirsty, you're body is already dehydrated. So no, drinking only when you're thirsty is a bad idea. Also, to the person who said water can kill you...Yes it can, but you only would not have to drink ALOT of water, youd have to gulp it down in one setting. Meaning gallons of water in on setting....I wouldn't worry too much about that.

Also, monitoring your urine color is a decent indicator, however, there are other things that can affect the color of your urine, such as different foods and beverages, and also most multivitamins. Just make sure you drink frequently.

I hate water so I usually only drink Propel and milk. Recently I'll go until 6 PM before I have a drink. Probably not the best thing but I just don't desire it.

If you hate water, you probably are trying to drink nasty tasting water. I can't drink tap water in certain areas of the country...and some brands of bottled water are nasty.

Of course, I'm in no position to criticize based upon taste as I simply cannot stand milk. I can't tell the difference between milk that is good and milk that is turning. Obviously once milk is curdled it doesn't take a rocket scientists...but milk just tastes nasty to me. *blech*

The tap water in my town is known to be very good. I used to drink strictly water a few months ago. Out of cheapness really. That was when I was poor and my apartment way over my income. Now I splurge and get the Propel powder packets, so I guess I still do use the tap water with it though.

With Milk turning it's best to use the smell test. If it smells close to nothing it's good, if your getting something funky you've got a potential new dairy product on your hands.

This is interesting...

Just a hypothesis from a commoner:

Water is denser than fat, and fat is not soluble in water. By drinking large amounts of water, couldn't you trick your intestines into absorbing less fat, by limiting the actual contact of the fat with the intestinal surface (through which it's usually absorbed), thus having the fat leave the body undigested? (I don't know, just a thought...)

I do know your water need depends strongly on your weight, activity, weather conditions and a whole lot more. I don't know if it's any use, but I think there are some calculators on the web that give an indication of your need for water based on weight and age.

Here's one I found: Don't know how useful it really is though.

Just be sure you spread it evenly over the day, so you won't over drink and your body can manage.

Oh, and yeah, drinking water is a great way to trick your oral desire for 'eating' :)
