Was running always this hard?

I'm a little overweight and haven't done any sports since High School. My problem is even running around the block makes me feel like wanting to die. Should I start walking fast first? What distances? Walking doesn't really seem to make me tired unless it's a really fast walk.

Yes, running is that hard if you haven't done much recently.

Walk briskly for as long as you can. When you can walk briskly for 30-45 minutes, try running a bit.

Also try HIIT, Run for 30 seconds, walk for 30 seconds. (or run for one minute, walk for one minute). This can help build your lung capacity, and resistance to lactic acid.

aevans is right as usual, start slowly and work your way up - it get's easier. the important thing is to not give up - as so many people do.
