Want to run... What do I need to know?

Hello!

I'm 19 and I want to start running regularly to help me get in and stay in shape. I haven't done any exercise to speak of for about 6 or 7 years, but I really want to make it a habit now. I'm 5'5'' and weigh 107, so I'm not overweight, just totally under-exercised.

How far should I walk/run to start out and how long should I stay at that distance? Is there anything that I should know? I'm totally new to this.

Thanks for your help!

welcome to forum. Below is a link to a great site for beginners. While there look for the link for "3 weeks to a 30 minute running habit". I used it and advanced running to run my first 10K last October, will be doing a 1/2 marathon in May and a full marathon in October. Good Luck, keep the faith and if you have any questions let me know.

glad to see another runner joining us! best of luck getting into it. i've found the peace and solitude of running alone to be very helpful to me so far this year. there's something great about the non-competitive aspect of something like running. :)

wow it is really cool to stumble across this post! I am also 19 and I started running on Saturday as well ! I also agree that is a great link rjajr57.. i learned quite a bit and I need to make some changes to my new routine it appears.

So yesterday I went to the running store and got my first pair of running shoes and they will definately not be my last! I purchased a pair of Brooks shoes after trying on a few different pairs and taking them around the block. I mentioned to the saleswoman that I wanted alot of coushin in the heel area because I tend to land hard as I am carring alot of weight!

Anyways, I walked to the track last night and ran 2 miles in my new shoes and what a difference it made!! I was way more comfortable and it took alot less out of me! I didnt cramp up as much and it actually seemed to help my breathing significantly..

Just wanted to share!

good job. and remember to reward yourself after every goal attained. Shoes are a great beginning for your endevour but the most important tool is what you develop inside, desire, guts, determination and consistency.above all, have fun.
