Wanna see my ride?

Gang,

For no other reason then pure gratification...I bought myself a Garmin Edge 705. It attaches on my bike and tracks pretty much everything!

For my dispaly windows I selected:

window #1
Time en route
Speed
Distance
Calories
Cadence
Elevation
Heart-rate
Grade%

window #2
Time of day
avg speed
avg cadence
avg heart-rate
total ascent
total descent
max. speed

So I rode my favorite ride and downloaded it to the Garmin Training Center. While goofing around I found a way to view the whole ride on GoogleEarth. I can not post it, but I can send you an email with an attached file. When you open the file, it'll take you to GoggleEarth and show you my entire ride. My trail is paced with several "bites" that you can click on.....and each bite opens a window that'll show you my stats (distance, HR, cadence, speed, etc). It's all there! Surrounding my trail are small boxes that have pics other people have taken over the years so you can see the surrounding area.

"I Love Muscles" has checked it out and can verify this is not some scheme to get you to open a file or something ridiculous. If anyone is interested, just email me at Homeinsulation@aol.com and I'll reply back with the file (it actually gets sent directly from the GoogleEarth program).

Technology is MIND-BLOWING

I give the Garmin Edge 705 a HUGE approval for outstanding technology. It's not super-easy to use right out of the box...but they've done a great job and making it very straight-forward and easy to use. The data is just incredible too.

From my ride, here are the general stats:

Total time: 2 hours 24 minutes
Distance: 22.49 miles
Total calories burned: 2,129
average cadence: 69 (I don't pedal on fast downhills, I stand & suspend)
average speed: 9.33 mph
average heart-rate: 135 (drops due to downhills)
max heart-rate: 171
Total ascent: 3,211 feet

I bet their next model will incorporate an MP3-player, blue-tooth and some kind of audio-feedback that you can hear....that and a heads-up disply that is integrated into your sunglasses and some way to interact with this forum while you ride! :)

How do you load your maps on?

I didn't get the package that included detailed maps....I don't intend to use the Edge 705 for use other then my riding. It has basic mapping, but that isn't part of this.

The unit records all the data and you just hook the thing up to the computer....as soon as you dock the unit, the Training Center launches and ask you if you want to download new ride data...you click 'yes' and in seconds you're looking at a map of where you went and a chart full of data. Under "view" you click the option to see it on GoggleEarth and again, within seconds, you're looking at your entire ride contrasted against the PLANET. Zoom-in and you see all the hundreds/thousands of 'bites' that make-up your ride data. It's amazing. Again, I'd have to send you the file that gives you the info on my ride so you can go to GoogleEarth and see it. If you haven't used GoogleEarth yet, check it out. I'm pretty sure this should get you there....

I've got a Magellan Explorist. I use it mostly for fishing. LOL

I have detailed maps of all the lakes I visit. Tried using it for hunting but it doesn't beat a good compass.

Damn thing is like a laptop. I still haven't figured out all the features it has.

The day you figure it all out....the next day it'll break, fall in the water or just plain get stolen. :)

Have you ever noticed how a cell phone, no matter how perfectly well you take care of it...starts having strange problems or goes bad one day after it's warranty expires? It's like these things are programmed with a termination date!

The Garmin 705 rocks - very, very sweet!

But, I don't believe you burned 2000+ calories @ 9 mph in 2.5 hours. I would have guessed 1000 - 1200 max.

Not even close.....

Mountain biking is good for 675 to 900 calories per hour and you have to remember I'm still weighing-in at 230-pounds.

G8....some of those grades peaked at 17% and many loomed between 12-15%...it's a Gawd-awful grind, or didn't you catch the part about the total ascent being over 3,211-feet?

9mph is pretty slow in terms of road-bikes, but it's a whole different world on the dirt. These tires are 1.75 - 2.25" wide with knobbies.....rolling resistance, steep grades, etc....this ain't your weenie-tires on asphalt! :D I've heard it said that one mile on the dirt is worth 3 on the street. Don't let the mph-average fool you, I've taken many an experienced road-bikers on this ride and it never fails to put some hurt on 'em. A better measure is to look at the heart-rate; that tells you what kind of power-output we're looking at...and don't forget, what takes 25 minutes to grind-up, takes but 3 minutes to cruise down...so the majority of my time is spent pumping away on a steep incline. Trust me, the cal-burn is very close to accurate...this is anything but a 9mph beach-cruise on the pavement!

Hmmm....put it this way; my HR on the dirt at 4-6mph on these grades is about the same power-output & HR that I need to do 18-24mph on a road bike. The HR & calorie-projection isn't inaccurate! Heck, even in spin-class I can generate 750 cal's per hour.....

Here's a random snippet:
Distance Elapsed: 7.1 mi
Speed: 6 mph
Pace: 9:28 /mi
Heart Rate: 149 bpm
Cadence: 73 rpm

Now ask yourself what kind of condition gives you 6mph at nearly 150 bpm & 73 cadence? That's why it's called MOUNTAIN biking. ;)

Now retract your comment before I go super-novel on your G8-butt! ;) :D

Hell no its waterproof and it floats. Learned my lesson when I dropped my last GPS unit down a hole in the ice. LOL

Sweet ride, BSL ;)

I need more gadgets. I've got to get me one of those things ... I'm not sure what for, but I just have to have one ;)

BSL, I missed the part about it being on a trail... I will retract what I said because although I don't know what "super-novel" means, I am pretty sure I don't want it especially on my butt...:)

It means I go through great written-length to prove to you whatever my point is....text upon text upon text until the server crashes from memorty-exhaustion! :D

Send me your email address......you gotta check-out this technology & trail. But seriously, hill-grinds are anywhere from 3.8-6 mph and you'll be doing them at 145-165 bpm, you can push harder, but it's tough to sustain for long periods. I usually sprint as I approach the top too...but trust me, it's a tough workout!....one day when you get down to L.A. we should do it!
