Walking

I know that this is the "running" forum, but this seemed like the best place to get the help I desire.

I want to lose around 20 pounds in 2-3 months and I need to know if walking in place, at a fairly brisk pace, for 4 hours a day will allow me to get the desired results.I know that to get the best results I SHOULD be running, but because of my job hours I only have nights free, as a result I have limited options on where/how I can exercise. I'm also on a VERY tight budget so a gym and any special equipment is simply out of the question as well. All I have is a fairly small apartment and whatever I can do that doesn't require equipment.

I may have set my goal a tad high, but I would like to try and lose 1-2 pounds a week.My first goal is to simply lose weight and I can worry about regaining muscle mass once my body is at a more normal weight.

Basic body information
Age: 23
Height: 5'10
Weight: 227
Body fat: Allot =P
Life style: Very inactive. But I'm looking to make a healthy change.

PS. I don't need any help with creating a healthy diet since I'm more than capable of figuring that one out =P

Curious. Your work hours prevent you from running at night, but you can walk 4 hours a day? If you can walk 4 hours... you can save a lot of time by jogging. Building muscle will help shed weight quicker. Running would be optimal (or anything more intense like biking, skating, swimming).

Its not safe or desirable to run at night. And to clarify I have been doing this about 4 hours each night after work. I typically get home from work, and after 30 minutes of relaxation, I simply start walking in place for a few hours. I know your first instinct is to tell me to run, but I simply can't alter my situation so I have to make the best of it.

And as I said in my other post, I only have my nights free, so I need to figure out an affective workout that will get the job done.

Hmm... can't you run in place though? Alternatively jump rope and jumping jacks would get your heart rate going quickly. I'm trying to picture walking in place for a duration of 4 hours and I can't "visualize" it...

Since you're on a budget and exercising at night a jump rope and at least one set of dumb bells should be your best friends... from your description you may be overweight and a jump rope might be hard to get into, but you can use it to mix it up a bit. Like jumping a short set, walking or jogging in place, doing another short set or jumping jacks, walk, jumping jacks, etc.

You want to get the heart rate up any way you can. Muscle + Oxygen = Fat loss.

Dumb bells for strength training. Arms, chest, legs (important to get those legs in shape so you can use them for more intensive cardio). Muscle is the first part of that equation. It won't directly burn the fat like cardio but muscle will burn calories.

Try an arobic type video. My wife likes Tai Bo. Jump Rope is really effective two. Just get your heart going anyway you can. You can get it done with less than an hour a day if you work a little harder than just walking in place. Switch it up too. I can't imagine walking in place every night as being very exciting.
