Walking your dog and how to train him or her.

Okay.. my doggie is an American Bulldog and a strong puller.
What I've been doing is training him in a sort of non traditional way. What I do is allow him to walk beside me or behind me, in a sort of 1/2 circle. I do this because I know dogs aren't supposed to walk in front of you because you are the master, and he has a a tendency to pull much harder if he's running ahead. Also, I decided a while ago that I want to use a long retractable leash so he could get a lot more exercise than if he just walked right next to me all of the time. I reward with treats, and I allow him to stop and sniff as much as wants IF he is behind me or to the side. I don't allow him to stop and sniff at all if he runs ahead, instead I stop and pull him back until he's walking next to or beside me (I say BAD DOG and tug the least when he does this, not to hurt him, but it does get his attention, and I don't use a choker). I'll also make him sit down before we continue on. It seems to be working pretty well so far, but it needs more work, since I haven't been walking him as much I should.
Do YOU have any strategies for training your dog on your leash? I'd love to hear ideas. Thanks.

Training my dog was soooo hard. He was useless at puppy classes. The only techniques I found that worked was following the advice of the "dog whisperer." He's actually incredibly good! My dog fought to go in front of me which actually made him more stressed as he felt that he was leading me. Once he let go of that responsibility and accepted that he was following my lead he became sooo chilled out and walked so slow!
Apparently (according to Cesar Milan) when they are sniffing and looking around it means they are in a hyper frame of mind still.
Also stuff like before you leave the house. Who goes through the door first? Is he calm when you put the lead on him..stuff like that.

Have a look here:
Milan's techniques are explained properly. He helped me :)

Yeah.. my training technique for my dog is a little unconventional, but it's working for us... so far.
