Walk/run program

Ok, I have to start this by saying I have pretty low stamina. My goal is to some day be able to run with my sister-in-law and to take my dog, she runs 5 miles on a regular basis. I am not sure of how often, as I am not where near her level, I am afraid to ask, I am sure whatever it is I will convince myself I can't do it and not even try. So for now I am working on a short term goal of being able to jog or run at a pace where I can still say a sentence for 30 minutes.

I recently found a program where you walk for so long and run for so long and gradually reduce the amount of time that you walk and increase the run time. It's an 8-week course meant to be done 3 to 4 times a week.

Is this the best way for someone starting out to get into running?

I've used it a few times...I need to get back to it and stay....

Yes. run for a while, walk until you catch your breath, repeat. Do this and you'll soon be keeping up with your sister-in-law.

It sounds good to me. It is called interval training. I remember that is how my PT got me into running last year. She would then decrease the time I walked and before I knew it, I could run for over 5 minutes. I was surprised!

Now I love running and participate in small fun runs :)

Anyone try this to keep you going long?

Going long and hard aint easy.
I work all day, take care of my wife and kids at night and find little time for myself. My “me” time is my morning run, an hour of just me. I love doing new routes and pushing my iPod volume to high. Lately I’v been downloading free music podcasts made specifically for running. There are a few out there but I think the most consistent is Motion Traxx. Anyone else try that?
