Sport Vitamins in the news

Sport Fitness
With all of the studies coming out about vitamins and supplements I wanted to know what people thought about the coverage and if it's affecting your vitamin intake? I will continue to take my Olay Multivitamins and total energy pack because they have the right amount of vitamins and minerals that women need in their regular diet. Your thoughts?

I was watching the news last night and they said "Vitamins, how they may be harming you". By the end it was totally contradicted with, they are ok to take. Just dont take too much.

There are also issues about how much "vitamin" is actually in these vitamins. Some brands tested find that they do not contain anywhere near the amount of the specified vitamin.

It also depends on how well your body absorbs vitamins. Most of the time we do not absorb them properly. So in the end, we end up pee'ing them out. Should you stop taking vitamins? I'm not saying that. That's your call :)

I take my multi-vitamin faithfully every day. I didn't see this on our local news, but I have a comment about vitamins being safe. I had two sons in 4 years and took prenatal vitamins literally from the day I found out I was pregnant with #1. I also nursed both boys until they were 1 year old so I continued on my prenatals. When my youngest son was finished nursing and I had my annual visit to my OB/GYN I asked if I should continue my prenatals and for how long. He suggested at least 6 months due to the effort your body goes through to support yourself and your baby. Now from the time my youngest son was 2 months old I had been having heart flutters, numbness, weakness, and dizziness. I went from the OB/GYN to my family doctor to a neurologist. No one could figure out what was wrong with me. They all suggested that I was having what appeared to be early signs of Multiple Sclerosis, but there was no evidence even after having several MRIs and a spinal tap. I continued my prenatal vitamins until the spring of 2005 then switched to a regular multi-vitamin. Within the month I noticed the numbness fading and weakness wasn't so strong. I realized I hadn't had a dizzy spell in at least 2 weeks. I thought about what might have changed recently. I had an old bottle of my prenatals and started comparing the percentages to my regular ones. The B6 vitamins in my prenatals were 800%, I don't remember off hand what dosage it was, but it was shocking. My family doctor researched vitamin toxicity and found that the excessive vitamins MAY have been the cause for my problems, but it wasn't definite. He said if it was it may take a year or longer to completely stop the problems and there may be some minor permanent damage. I still have a really really small amount of numbness in my forearms and an occasional dizzy spell. I'm not guaranteeing it was from the vitamins and like I said I take my multi faithfully every single day, but in my opinion, some companies are not regulated like they should be. Apparently my problem wasn't a concern enough to my family doctor to report it...I have since switched doctors for other reasons. I just had an eye opening experience that in this day and age I didn't realize would ever be a concern.
Just my 2 cents :)

I never liked the idea of vitamins.
