I see nothing wrong with taking vitamins or supplements so long as they are "good". Some supplements are just plain bad.
Flax is a good supplement that I take at times. I've cut back since I was able to incorporate more of it into my menu though. I also occasionally take acidophilus when I need to take an antibiotic medicine (rarely).
For the past few years, I have not taken any vitamins or supplements and I have not been sick once. Ok, one time I had a tiny cold
I changed my diet so that it included a lot of fresh and organic foods. I also went vegetarian. I'm not saying it's for everyone, but if you're going to eat meat you have to take necessary precautions against the hormones and probiotics used on the animals.
One time I went to a holistic drug store and they gave me a complete break down of what minerals I need, what vitamins I am lacking, etc. Then they make recommendations on products that will "balance" you out.
Perhaps you can try that. For me, it really came down to eating fresh, organic foods whenever possible. Just get different opinions. Talk with a doctor, talk with a nutritionist, talk with a herbalist, talk with a naturopath, etc.
As a nutritionist I can tell you that most vitamins do not get absorbed into the body and they are wasted. However, a good multi-vitamin won't hurt anyone.
