Sport V-8 Juice: are there healthier alternatives??

Sport Fitness
Unfortunately, I don't have a good juicer, so prepared vegetable juices work fine for now. Lately, I have been drinking V-8 alot, but I have decided to stop. Why? Each can has 880mg of sodium! That's 37% on a 2,000 calories diet. So, are there better, low salt vegetable juices on the market that won't break the bank??

There is low sodium V8 out there now that I've seen. Also if your local grocery store has an organic section there are other brands that I've seen with low sodium vegetable drinks like V8. "R. W. Knuteson" I think is the brand name.

Generally, every processed food item is loaded down with sodium. I believe this is done to enhance the taste, and get consumers hooked on the product. Consequently, too much sodium can lead to high blood pressure, and thus heart-related issues. I've also heard that sodium can cause your body to retain more water, adding excess weight. (not sure if this is true, though)

Your best bet is to simply invest in a blender. They're relatively cheap now-a-days, and it would be worth it the long-run.

regular grocery store branded vegetable juice is much lower in sodium (at least the ones i buy) than V8 if you choose to go that route

"Greens Plus" mixed with a 2 cups of orange juice in the morning to get my day started....in combination with a varied diet, great stuff.

I'll drink a low sodium V8, but only because its like a burst of flavor to my tongue...not because I think its really gonna replace a serving of vegetables. it might have the vitamins, but not the fiber, and a lot of salt.

wow yer right Derwyddon...didn't even see that part of the post.

16 oz of OJ is about 50g of carbs, nearly every bit of it sugar, and barely 1g of fiber.
That's more carbs than LV lets me have on non-training days.
and greens + is probably a fine supplement...but its way overhyped IMO.

why do you 'need' to get quick sugars into the bloodstream before a shower?

why not just get up, shower, then eat some healthier carbs like oatmeal, along with protein, like eggs?

if anything, wake up and pound back 20g of whey protein to get fast digesting protein into the system. at least that promotes muscle recovery and a positive nitrogen balance.

WHO said I "NEEDED" it? I find that as opposed to drinking plain water or a protein shake it gives me a much needed quick early morning energy boost. I don't drink coffee so it's a better option for me.

As for the 20grams of whey - whats the point of doing that when my breakfast will have 40g of protein anyways?

Each to his or her own.

breakfast

My breakfast is a combination of things: organic grain cereals, multigrain toast/bagels w/ natural peanut butter or nutella, egg whites, cantelopes, apples, bananas, tomatos, grapes, soy milk, sometimes shredded chicken in my omlette.

I thought this topic was about sodium levels in V8..haha

Your post indicates that knocking back 50g of sugar upon rising is somehow important. I was merely pointing out that 20g of fast digesting whey would actually be biologically beneficial..pulling you out of catabolism.

but you're right, to each his own.

I drink the low sodium V-8 every day. One 8oz. glass only contains 6% RDA of sodium and only 8gms of sugar (compared to 27gm in OJ) and only 50 calories. It also has 820mg (23% RDA) of potassium, lots of lycopene and vitamin C (I'm reading off the bottle). Also, your body needs sodium to function, just not to much. Most doctors tell you to cut sodium if you have high blood pressure because it dehydrates you and thickens the blood, but most people don't drink enough water and they go through life dehydrated anyhow. Drink more water! Nothing will replace raw veggies (I choke down a plate every day) but low sodium V-8 is not a bad supplement. And like malkore said, I like the taste (tomatoes, mmmmmm!).
