Use of Whey Protein...

Hey, Just a quick question on how often to take Whey Protein throughout the day? And can it be used as a meal replacement? When i say meal replacement i still eat my main 3 meals a day but i have a protein shake in between each meal and an hour or so before bed, is this wrong?

Even if im not working out should i be taking Whey Protein 3 times a day? I also mix it with semi skinned milk as I just cant do it when mixed with water... Comments please! Thanks alot

milk yes.

there are many diffrent reasons to use whey, from runners to pro bodybuilders. However whey is no substitute for food, its better to eat high protien food at every opertunity and use whey as a last resort.

taking it 3times/day wont harm you, but remember that if your not using it, you will just get very fat.

questions for you
- how many grams of protein, fat and carbs are in one serving (including milk)
- do you want to lose any body fat?
- do you want to maintain what muscle you have, or put on muscle?
- what do you eat in a day?
- what sort of work out do you do, and how offen?

I cant really give you a detailed answer untill you type up all this information, otherwise i'd be writing you a book.

maybe it would be best for you to start a diary in the diary forum and type up all your details, then post here

how often to use whey protein throuhout the day? as less as possible. solid whole food first and foremost, protein powder if needed

can it be used as a meal replacement? in and of itself, no.

using it in b/w meals and before bed is alot of powder each day. any particular reason why you're doing this and not using solid food?

Along with what these guys said already, it also depends on what else you eat throughout the day, if you aren't getting enough protein with your meals, you should work on that first.

You shouldn't use it as a meal replacement, unless (again until you have the rest of your meals in check) you mix it with other foods, like in a blender, and make a legitimate 'balanced' meal.

Ok:

- 23.3g Protein, 4.6g Fat (obviously mainly milk), 12g Carbs (mainly milk again)

- My main goal i suppose is to lose weight altho i do want to pack on muscle, currently weighing 13stone (lost a stone so far) at a height of 6foot or so. If it has to be one of the other it is to lose body fat and then when i reach a certain size pack on the muscle then?

- In a day i eat:
Breakfast: Cornflakes with Semi Skinned milk with water
Lunch: Chicken salad sandwich with water
Dinner: Red/White meat with brown rice and jacket potato
No snacks or sweet drinks or anything like that, my diet does lack vegetables tho...

- My workout involves a 5K run three times a week with a days rest in between. The day of rest from cardio is used for weights which involves:

All 3 sets of 10
Incline Bench Press, 40kg
Close Grip bench Press, 40kg
Behind Neck Press, 20kg
Lateral raise, 6kg
Dumbell Bicep Curl, 14kg

Above is twice a week with leg weights once a week, not sure on weights:
Squats
Leg Extension
Leg Curl
Standing Calf Raise
and Leg Raise

Forgot to mention ab excercises with lower back excercises on the same day as the running. After all excercises i take a protein shake, i aim for 3 a day but in reality its mainly 2.

The only reason why i use it is because i cant afford or have the time to eat chicken breast in the morning or have those egg drinks. I thought it was a worthy replacement for the other 2 meals to make up my 5 a day, obviously i was wrong....

Really really appreciate the help, thanks guys

Well your original question has been answered, that you cant use powder as meal replacement. (tho we are all guilty of doing it)
You would be better off having a small protien shake and a small sandwich, or even toast.

Judging by your workout it seems you need a much better program. Tho magazines like muscle and fitness are not scientificly great they are geared toward people like yourself who are intrested in getting in to shape.

buy muscle and fitness or mens health and follow one of there programs for a month, then type up any improvments you have made. then we can adjust the program to suit your goals.

Awesome, thanks a lot for all the help!
