Undignified pigging out on holiday

Hi,

Unbelievable-I went to the UK on a conference to present my research and was there for 7 days...I left my home at 130lbs (I'm 5ft6) and I arrived back weighing 139lbs.
I normally train 6 days per week, yoga/weights/running. I did no exercise during this week and drank wine every evening and went to restaurants every day.
I can't believe I gained 9lbs in 7 days. Well, actually, I can, I ate and drank like an animal.
Its crazy.....I must have some sort of eating disorder.....some new, undefined one....from day to day, I eat super super healthy food and do all of this training, but the minute I am "off-duty", so to speak, I go mad, crazy.
Is anyone else like this, the minute they either go on holiday or go away for work?
So anyway now I have to work my ass off big time to shift these 9lbs of wine/cake that I enjoyed all that week. Uggghhh!!!

I am absolutely the same. It's as if there is something in my head that says 'You're on holiday. It won't last forever. Eat as much as you can!'

I haven't found a cure for it yet, but I found that it is not too difficult to get rid of the extra weight afterwards. I noticed that during my 'off times', I eat a lot of stuff that I usually don't eat, and loads more salty stuff than usual. So a lot of the extra weight is actually water retention. I also don't drink enough while I'm out and about, and if I go back to eating like I was before and drinking enough, I usually get back to my starting weight within about a week. So for now I just accept it, and just work a bit harder the week after. :)

Hi Sophie. I am in sales, and travel about 50% of the month. I have taken a haietus so to speak, to lose the weight this time. Working mostly from home, and locally, using my budget as an excuse. But I am EXACTLY the same way as you. You are def. not alone!

I tend to eat to excess, even if it's healthy. For example, I am doing South Beach and lean protiens (chx and pork) are on the menu. I went to a buffett, and found myself eating a couple of full chicken breasts and vegetables, then was angry I didn't lose weight. Granted, I only splurged one meal. I really do need to learn self-control, but dieting makes me so hungry, and then you get around an abundance of food, and it's hard to not satisfy that hunger! Ah well... keep on keeping on!

You're definitely not alone! I go through fairly regular cycles of "undignified pigging out" too. It's extremely difficult for me to avoid old eating habits ALL the time. But I'm always too scared to weight myself right after. I wait about a week, and usually the damage isn't too bad by then ;)

England does that to me. I eat non-stop while I'm there. I'm really nervous about my 8 day trip there in January. I went for 4 days at the beginning of May and put on 4 lbs but like San had lost it and more within a week of getting home.

For me it's a social thing. While everyone else is pigging out and drinking alchohol, it feels kind of awkward to order a salad, asking for lite dressing on the side, or any other thing where you have to explain to the waiter how you want it healthy. It seems all social events revolve around food in one way or another. The temptation to just eat what everyone else is eating is sometimes overwhelming. Also the comments can get irritating. Such as ordering a grilled chicken sandwich once and not eating the fries. People might say "oh those won't hurt you". Hell, I've been made fun of for ordering Diet Coke.

Oh my god your posts made me feel so much better. I'm glad I'm not alone in this. The tragedy is...I even went "without carbs" most of the week, in an attempt to maintain my body mass, yeah right, what a joke. In my pitiful atkins moment, what I actually did instead of eating balanced meals was to pig out on huge quantities of meat, fatty meat, fried meat, more meat, and ridiculous amounts of chocolate. And of course stupid amounts of wine, which I convinced myself has little to no calories, but come on, lets get real here.

And yes lets not forget the social issue as well.....if everyone is drinking and you say, Oh, I'll just have an orange juice, you get stared at like you are a circus freak, its not fair, so you end up boozing.

I reckon next time I'll pretend that I"m on antibiotics so I can get out of drinking.

So far, have dropped 3 of the 9lbs in a week, so I'm guessing fluid retention was a big issue. Now I have to work on the sausage/chocolate retention.

:)

I went on a week-long cruise to Mexico this past summer, and oh maaan. I gained a whopping 13lbs. I was on vacation for 10 days, 3 of which were spent in LA celebrating my older sister's graduation from UCLA, and then straight from there my whole family jumped ship. The whole time we ate, ate, and ate some more. I think the only reason I didn't gain even more weight was because I insisted on walking up and down the stairs because it was faster than waiting for the elevator.

This happens a lot. 80-90% of that weight is water and will be lost quickly. You body is used to a strict diet and exercise program and when you shock it like that it holds on to the water not sure what to do. Don't worry about it. I went camping one time for 4 days and gained 13 lbs. It came off in like 4 days and got me off a plateau I was on.
