Undereating?!?

Hello all,

I just posted this in my diary and then thought I should put it here!

I have lost 18 pounds and hit a platuea - I've lost nothing now for three weeks! And I am wondering why and whether it's undereating.

I am female 5ft10 I weigh 188 pounds, I am currently eating 1500 a day, I believe my bmr is 2500 and I was going for 1000 less.

However I also exercise and I am not taking this into account (I know I should) so I do approx 500 3 days per week and 300 one day. I do a mixture of weights, running and swimming and just starting spinning.

So on three days if I take the exercise in then really my net intake is only 1000 I guess.

Hi Miss Charlie,

Do you feel O.K with your diet? 1500 calories a day is a bit too low and it can slow down your metabolism, it can be the reason why you hit the roadblock after losing 18 lbs. I think you need to take a look at what you eat seriously. Watch out the high GI food (GI stands for Glycemic Index)

Hmm, three weeks is a while but 1500 calories doesn't really sound ridiculously low. How do you feel physically? Do you feel tired and run down, or do you feel good to go? If you feel great you can wait it out... otherwise, it can sometimes help to have a one day diet break - just eat up on that one day, and then start back on the next day. That can often kick start things.

I take a day off from my "diet" where I don't worry about it. I have also stopped worrying about the scale and just how I feel. My scale is back on the move thankfully!

Hi all, thanks for the responses.

I had a cheat day on sat (partially because I
Was going out and partially on this basis!) but I still didn't go above my bmr + exercised calories. I hope this kick starts it!

I am bad at eating 1200 for a few days so I can have 1800 another and I am not eating all healthy 0% fat food or anything so I get a mixture.

Interesting question - yes I am tired, but to be honest I Think that's just from life generally, not the diet!

I do have to force my calories up quite often in the evening if I haven't had enough, so not sure I'd manage to eat more calories. If I'm hungry I do eat, so no hunger issues.

Generally a day is

6.30 breakfast - 3 weetabix, skimmed milk
12.00 lunch - 300 cal soup or a salad (still approximate 300)
4pm yoghurt, poss fruit
7pm dinner - this varies considerably typically it'll be

Jacket and filling
Potatoes meat or fish and veg
Steak and salad
Omelette and salad
stir fry veg (no oil)

Occasionally Pasta with pesto I am trying to cut down on pasta and bread.

Charlie,

Have you tried any Weight Manage Plans offered by Herbalife? I've been using the product for 2 weeks now and have lost 12 pounds. And not only have I lost weight but by replacing 2 of my meals with the DELICIOUS shakes, (removed)

It looks like you're having over half your daily calories at 7pm (dinner), would that be right? What time do you go to bed?

I generally go to bed at 10pm.

This week I have tried to eat a bit more and so have eaten more at lunch so make sure I eat 1500 everyday and then 1800 one day (sat!). Sadly this idea does not seem to have worked!! I have put on 2 pounds this week!!

So I am guessing that answers the question although how I have put weight on eating that much is beyond me!!! I use a food diary app and I am very honest.

It's so frustrating!

Have you written down the amount of protein, fat, and carbs you consumed? (in grams). What about the total daily values? If not you should start. This will open up the ability for you to experiment with your diet (try adjusting percentages and swapping meals). You could just be eating too much of one thing.

Also, are you drinking LOTS of water? Like 6-8 glasses a day? (about 64 oz.)

In my honest opinion...have you tried making dinner your lightest meal, and say, lunch your biggest one? The thing about dinner, in your case, is that it's 3 hours before bed-time. This means your body has far less time to start digesting it than it would say, lunch. Maybe you could try swapping those?

If this puts it into perspective, the last meal of my day is from 8 P.M. to 11 P.M. and I sleep at 4 A.M.

Hiya.

I record everything but I've never really looked at it in detail... I have now.

Ok so last week when I upped my calories slightly I was eating (on average)

Fat 30% of daily calories (but of course fat has far more cals in!)
carbs 50%
protein 20%

I would point out in the weeks prior to this my proprtions are all over the place but on average the same.

Thanks for the suggestion, I can def try that when I am at home but my problem is I am away for work a lot and where we stay the option is heavy dinner or no dinner! What's worse is there I literally eat right before bed!!

I guess I could try having two meals a day, but it would be very very difficult as I only have salad for lunch there and no other option in the canteen is edible!!

Going back to the earlier % I do eat a lot more fat than I did last time I dieted as I did rosemary conely where everything is less than 5% fat, but it's very restrictive so I didn't want to make things so hard.

Well the proportions look pretty good if you ask me...are you eating much sugar? That is kind of bad with those as your dinner options. Hm....Maybe you could try not to eat the entire dinner?

Also, how many calories are you eating a day? OR are you still in process of recording that? (I figure the numbers will be different for days where you have a heavy dinner, and days where you're at home)

Interesting question.

If I am working at office I generally have 1300 in a day, then 1800 once a week. While travelling I tend to have 1600 each day (est) but I think the fat and carb ratios are worse these weeks. Looking at the app for these weeks it looks like this is true.

Today I ate cereal for breakie, salad for lunch, dinner of salad, chicken, avacado and my cals are only 1100, so it's the debate, should I force myself to eat more? It's 10pm, I'll be going to bed soon so I'm saying no. I change my mind most days asto what the right thing to do is!!

Thanks for replying.
