Twice a day?

Would there be any negative effects if you chose to run short distances, a little more than a mile, twice a day (every other day)? Another question would have to be if there are any benefits from it...

My situation is that I enjoy running, but am still relatively new to it (started about a month ago)... so I can't run very far. Would it be better to just run once every other day and just build up to a farther distance, as opposed to twice in one day, every other day?

I think you're better off going once a day every other day. That may help prevent injuries and with more continuous effort help to build up your endurance. But, I don't think it will make a big difference.

This would most likely be an increase of more than 10% a week which could potentially get you injured. So while I feel that running more often allows your body to adapt to running, I wouldn't add a second daily run to your routine until you've increased your mileage significantly.

The key to running is consistancy. If it's one mile every other day, then so be it. Just be consistant about it. One will turn into two, and then three, etc. I would incorporate walking into your plan as I think it will help allow you to build on that one mile.

I guess it would be a little overkill if I did it that way... I'm just a little impatient. I'll just stick with what I'm doing now though!

Thanks for the replies:)

You could gain a lot with interval training rather than doing it twice a day. As stated, the best way to get used to running is to continue running.

An important rule to follow is never increase distance and speed at the same time. With that said, I think you can make a lot of 1 mile. Simply run-sprint-run-walk is the best way to build up the miles and speed. Just remember to take it easy. If you feel like jumping up and start running, that is a good thing. Just don't go outside and over do it. Just play it smart. You already got the running bug on you, so you got a good start.

Good answers...yes, the way to move is stealthy like the tiger...an even and determined pace.....I just read about this...in an article on another site Traxee.com Its a women's running site that I visit along with this one and a few others that I find you get really great answers and inspirations from. Best of luck with your new run!

Honey,

I personally wouldn't run that much in one day. The impact of running can be hella stressful on your joints. If you want two cardio sessions a day, an elliptical machine is low-impact solution. If you don't have access to an elliptical, try walking. Aim for 2.5 miles in 30 mins.
Another way to increase your running is to do strength training for stronger legs.

I used to go 2 times, everyday, when I was younger!! But I was kind of a nut back in those days (when I was running competitively).

Nowadays I just do 1 time every other day (the other days I take 1 1/2 hour walks). I would run for 45-60 minutes. But just for fitness these days.
