TV writer's strike

Even though I support worker's rights, I'm feeling sad as a consumer because I'm not getting the TV shows I want.

I'm a huge fan of Jon Stewart, and I'm starting to go through Daily Show withdrawals. I'm tired of re-runs.

I just want the strike to get settled so everyone can be happy.

So I wanted to know, is anyone else starting to feel bad about the lack of late night talk shows and the eventual demise of pre-taped sit-coms and dramas?

It will, they always do.

Nope

Sorry, I hate unions, they are out dated and destructive

If you're a good enough writer you should be able to negotiate a good contract without strike action; if you're not then find a new job

I haven't watched tv in a couple years (except for a couple shows here and there at aunt gatherings) so I did not know there was a strike. How long has it been going on? With how many shows? When I used to watch tv I liked the Daily Show as well :)

Agreed. Unions have moved past workers rights, into extortion from corporations.

Writers, what a bunch of baby's.

"I don't get the recognition I need. I mean, I make 6 figures for working on a good show, but I am not attractive, like the actors, so I don't get the proper attention. That means I want to get paid for stuff on the internet too."

A-HOLES

If I had intended this thread to become a debate on the value and effectiveness of unions, I would have indicated that in the first post. Please keep the union bashing to a minimum. Remember there would be no such thing as workers rights, benefits, or minimum wage without the people who fought for those things. I blame not the union for this strike, I blame those who are not complying with their wishes or at least willing to compromise. Those are my views on the subject and I will not go any further. I find phrases like "unions suck" offensive so I will state that now. Any further debate/insults regarding unions will result in a deletion of this thread.

So, feel free to talk about the strike and the tv shows affected. But please keep the derogatory comments about unions to yourselves.

No, but seriously, I keep tuning into Leno, and forgetting that they are old. I realized it last night when he started making jokes about the Patriots spying scandal, which happened like 2 months ago...damnit!

I just watched Nightline instead, and learned about dinosaurs, so it was OK.

I'm usually watching sports anyway. Always have a game on in the background.

Sometimes I'll remember to check out Daily Show or Colbert, but not being able to do this isn't the end of the world to me.

There is only one show currently airing that I make sure to watch: Dexter. [My other show is Sci-Fi's Battlestar Galactica, but it's on hiatus.]

So...I can't say that the strike really matters to me, though I do wish them all well...

I wonder what they'll do when their money runs out. Oh yeah...they'll go back to writing for the shows.

p.s. It should be writers's strike.

So you make a post that people can only contribute to if they have the same opinions as you?
Seeing as the whole topic centers around union action I can't see how you can ban comment on them

Long live freedom of speech :yelrotflmao:

She didn't ask what people's opnions of unions were, then shut them down when they expressed dislike for them.

She asked a specific question, and stated she finds it offensive when people say things like "unions suck".

Frankly, it offends me greatly as well. Unions wouldn't have existed in the first place if companies could be trusted to treat employees properly according to their individual merits and abilities. My husband is a union steward, and works for a major oil company. Their contract with the company actually promotes harmony as it draws clearly defined lines of expectations for everyone.

If you think for one second that a company of that size gives a crap about the individual merits of each employee and will treat them accordingly, then you live in a dream world.

I'm backing off now, b/c I'm doing what Spicy said she didn't want, which is playing into a debate.

This was the OP, the opening sentence is a comment on the value of Unions and at no point was it mentioned that other comments on unions were banned. She then follows up this post by bashing those who've said anything anti-union saying that isn't the purpose of the post and then continues into a socialist history lesson about the value unions once had and why we should all be quite grateful

Sorry, but I don't see why I can't give an opinion without people throwing their toys out of their pram and threatening to close a thread

Fine maybe I should take that statement out so no one gets confused. Obviously my point wasn't clear enough. I never wanted this thread to be about unions. That is why I stated that in my second post. So now you will have no excuse to discuss these things. I don't care if you're for them or against them. Don't talk about them. Period.
