Turning 30. Time to get healthier, lose some weight.

So, I am turning 30 in a few months and have decided now is the time to get healthy(er). I was in the best shape of my life freshmen year of college. I was 185, felt great and could do an endless number of pull-ups for the first time in my life. I am 6' and have a pretty big frame, so this is good for me. Since then, it has kind of gone down hill. After college I hovered between 200-220. In the last six months I have gone up to 230 and sat there since around the holidays. Between turning 30 and my wife calling me fat this weekend (yea, that is fun), it is time to make a change!

For the last fed days I have started by limiting my portions and today went on my first job. I am out of shape, so only went 2.33 miles. I think the plan is to keep eating healthier, and start going to the gym. I HATE gyms, but it is too darn cold to be running, at least for the next few months. I would love it if I could get down to under 200 by summer. Wish me luck!

Looking into gyms today reminded me why I hate gyms. They all seem to have this complicated web of startup fees, annual fees, or crazy payment structures. Why can't I just pick a gym, pay an affordable monthly fee (give me a treadmill, bike - not asking for a lot). Anyways, I am now looking into this "Couch to 10k" idea. There is a cool app for the iPhone. I might give this a week or so before reconsidering the gym idea.

Not a fan of gyms myself either when I can do all the same stuff right at home. I feel your pain in that regard. Have you checked on 24 Hour Fitness? Seemed decent. App can be a good idea. Hope it works out better for you. You'll get there though before summer arrives, hang in there and push through!

Thanks, dudeitstime! A little encouragement goes a long way. Looked into 24-hour, Lifetime, LA and Planet Fitness. Lifetime and LA won't give me prices without talking to a consultant. Planet Fitness charges $40 start-up fee, $29 annual fee, then $15/month. 24-hour charges $34.99 month-to-month, $39.00 Initiation fee, with $122.72 due at sign-up. At that point I might as well look into buying a treadmill (which I won't) or at least a sweet pair of shoes :)

Starting the 10k training tonight.
