Sport Tuna and Mercury

Is it safe or what? I've heard many different agruments going back in forth stating that mercury in fish is sometimes naturally occuring and not due to pollutants. The FDA says you should only eat about 5-6 oz of canned albacore tuna a week due to the mercury levels. Ablacore tuna is known to have a greater amount of mercury in it than light tuna.

I was wondering how many cans/servings of tuna everyone goes through on a weekley basis. Also what are your thoughts ? Is it a real danger? I'd really like to increase my protein intake and tuna has TONS of it.

A lot of advice given on health issues is always going to be a bit over-cautious. I eat about 3 cans a week and have never suffered any ill effects.

Here's a great article from T-nation, they suggest that a can a day is fine for a 200lb man

There is no appreciable risk of methyl mercury poisoning from canned light tuna. It averages about .2 ppm of methyl mercury content, as compared to the FDA limit of 1 ppm. Eat it to your heart's content.

I think I'm going to try a can a day with some veggies. Its a great alternative to chicken breast since it can be so dry and dull at times ! Thanks for the info guys.

k good because im thinking of having light tuna everyday or 2 days. only using half can just to make 1 sandwich a day putting what left in the bowl in the fridge for the next day

What else can you mix with Tuna besides Mayo? It seems too dry to use without it but I've always wondered about a healthier alternative but I'm only 15 and I figured it wasn't that big of a deal the mayo. I usually put a very little bit in it.

I know this may sound nasty, but I mix mine with Salsa. It tastes great

I don't eat tuna anymore because, no matter how small the amount, I don't want to ingest mercury. But, when I did eat it I liked to mix it with mustard and some blackening seasoning you can find at the store, and some chopped up pickles.

To my understanding, does all fish have mercury in it?

Yes. Methyl mercury is in all fish, and just about everywhere else, too. Mrecury is released into soil, water, and air by natural processes, as well as by man-made processes. Bacteria converts the mercury (hg) into methyl mercury (CH3Hg+). Just about anything in the water contains it, but most seafood only contains it in trace amounts well below the danger threshold of 1 ppm.

If mbarlow wants to avoid mercury, he can begin by avoiding his own body.

I just crack open the can, dump some hot sau in and eat it with a spoon:) It's good stuff. Another good recipe is to put the tuna in a bowl, mix in 1 egg (or egg white) and a few spoon fulls of oats (you can also add bacon bits if you like). Mix it together until it is a gewwy mess then make it into 1 or 2 pattys. Cook it on a skillit and eat it like a burger.

I have had people tell me that it is dangerous but if you think of all of the good stuff in it I can't see cutting it out completly. Of course some of these people say not to eat it while they are drinking a can of mountain dew lol
