Sport Trying to maintain a good diet... in China

Sport Fitness
Hi all,

I have an interesting situation that I'm trying to handle as effectively as possible(from a fitness/nutrition perspective). Namely... I'm in China for work, spending >80% of my time here, and typically over here for 2+ months at a time. The good news, is the hotel I generally stay at has a pretty good gym(though the freeweights are a bit lacking). The bad news... I don't have nearly as much control over my diet as I'd like.

An outline of what I usually do:

Breakfast: Buffet-style. Generally there's either fish(with too much oil) or chick available. I also frequently go for eggs(can get scrambled or as an omelet). I try and grab some fruit, and whatever vegetables are available - if they're not drowning in too much butter/oil.

Lunch: Provided for us at work - usually a decent mix of things. The main challenge here is that there's not always that much protein - the bits of meat are pretty small some days. Generally try and get as much protein as I can, but it's sometimes less than I'd like. Good news is that there's generally plenty of veggies here. Also white rice is available, but I try not to eat too much.

Pre-Dinner - I workout most days - lately I've been alternating between a full-body weight plan, and cardio(typically ~25 minutes of running).

Dinner: The hotel generally has a "Happy hour" that I rush to after my workout, with a selection of foods. Generally there is at least one non-fried meat choice(could be chicken, mutton, pork, or seafood depending on the day). Depending, I'll also have some seafood/pork dumplings if they're available and I feel I need more protein. Also fresh fruit and a few veggies are available here as well.

Room service is also available, but the only high-protein options are generally served with french fries(ugh) and/or bread+butter(double ugh) instead of some vegetable.

I guess the biggest issues are associated with the lack of control over my diet right now, since I don't have the ability to cook for myself:
1) Trying to reliably get enough protein - breakfast is OK, but the others are tougher
2) I'd like to have smaller meals in between breakfast/lunch and lunch/dinner, but don't have good means to do that right now.
3) Trying get calories where they need to be when I don't have any control over ingredients, etc. The good news is, weight-wise I've done a pretty good job of keeping things level, and I'm pretty confident I could slowly go up or down if I wanted. But I'm also pretty sure my calories aren't as consistent day-to-day.

Wondering if anyone else here has been in a similar situation - overseas, with protein supplements hard to find, and not a lot of choice in diet. Only good news is I'm making a short trip to Shanghai in a couple days, I might have a chance of finding some decent protein supplements somewhere.

For protein supplements, couldn't you go to a grocery store and buy beef jerky, dried squid, dried fish, etc.?

Of course, depending on restaurant food means that the food will be greasier than home cooked food. It does sound like the lunches cater to Chinese tastes (more vegetables, with meat as more of a side dish or seasoning) more than the hotel food does (is it a hotel that caters to visitors from the US?).
