Trying to lose weight, prefably quickly?

Hello everyone, I'm brand new here. :)

I'm 23 years old, 5'9", and weigh 180 lbs. When I was 20-21 I weighed around 140ish, and I thought I looked good, but I felt very unhealthy because the weight loss was mainly attributed to stress and anxiety. Once I got my head/emotions under control, I basically ballooned. I feel pretty awful, because I've always struggled with my weight, weighing close to 205 at my highest.

I don't look terrible, but I'm sure most of you know; weight can play havoc on your self-esteem, eh?

Back in the day I went on my own "diet" persay, and was eating a banana for breakfast, something small for lunch, about 10 baby carrots as a snack, and a tuna sandwich for dinner. I actually lost a considerable ammount of weight... I was surprised, and it made me feel great.

I guess what I'm trying to say/ask is this... I would love to lose weight quickly if it's at all possible. I'm not entirely sure how to go about it though. I'm on a pretty tight budget, so I don't have the funds to buy excersize equipment, or sign up for a gym membership. I was hoping to get some input on things I could do to lose weight, and some ways I could excersize my entire body WITHOUT the need for actual "equipment." Although, I'm sure that actually using a gym would be the best bet right?

Anything to help out would be greatly appreciated. If you have any questions for me, or need any other information, please don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks in advance.

exercise can really just be walking- walking at a moderate to fast pace is a great form of cardio... for strenght training, use two cans of beans or corn or something to give you some weight... or fill up milk jugs with water for some additional weight.

HOWEVER... at this forum, we encourage and stress healthy weight loss and lifestyle changes to stick with your weight loss... NOT quick fixes... a healthy weight loss is 1 percent of your body weight a week...

Yeah, I agree with the person above. Losing weight quickly is not a good thing. I've heard you should lose about a pound or two per week. If you drop a lot of weight quickly, you're mainly losing water weight and lean tissue. Dropping your calories too low slows your metabolism. That's why it's a good idea to cut your calories just a little and get some cardio exercise at least 3 times a week.

For free options for cardio, you could take up jogging (I personally hate jogging and prefer using cardio machines at the gym). Or maybe you could dance around at home for 30 minutes. Maybe you can borrow aerobics videos at the library. But yeah, I personally like gym machines best. I used to own a stationary bike and it helped me lose 20 lbs. And right now I am lucky enough to live in a city that has a rec center with a gym in my neighborhood with a $50/year membership.

if you have a dvd or vcr, check your local library for exercise dvd's that you could do in the privacy of your bedroom... or just turn up the music and dance your butt off - that's great aerobic exercise.

Welcome! Glad you joined us here. :)

Keep in mind that losing weight fast makes it more likely that you will put the weight back on. Not good! I know it's very hard to be patient, but losing weight at a rate of one pound per week is healthy for you, and it's much more likely to stay off!

You can have an exercise program with no equipment. Walking/jogging, stretching, and strength training right in your home can be very effective. Of course going to the gym and using free weights there is an awesome thing.

Keep in mind as well that what you eat is the most important part of losing weight. I would not recommend the diet you were on before, even though you lost weight. It looks like it was very low calorie, which probably messed up your metabolism. That likely contributed to you gaining weight back. A healthy diet with lean proteins, whole grains, some good fats, lots of fruits and veggies and plenty of water will serve you well.

Ok, thanks for the advice on not trying to lose it quickly...

Any other ideas on excersizes without equipment? Also, what specific foods should I try to eat? I'm very new to this, so I'm not even entirely sure what lean proteins and "good" fats" are...

Suggestions would be very welcomed! Thanks all.

head over to www.sparkpeople.com - and set yourself up a free account... many here use them for a way to record calories but as part of thier food tracker, they give you a suggested meal plan. www.slimfast.com used to do the same thing, not sure if they still do.

check out some of the diaries on this site as well - many people record their menus as to what they're eating.. I know mine includes one..

Lean protein is just what it sounds like - protein (check the nutrtion 101 thread in the nutrition forum for what protein and fats is) that's low in fat.. Chicken breasts, without the skin, turkey without the skin, lean cuts of meat, egg whites or egg substitues, some types of fish.

Thank you very much for the direction to sparkpeople.com, Mal.

It's a very interesting and helpful website, and I'm already putting it to use. The meal plans are geat too, I'm going to try to work them into everything once I get to the grocery store, lol.

So, thanks again! I'll keep you guys updated somehow. :)

Hey Platinum,
I can also feel your trouble because once I used to suffer with similar type of problem. I never went to gym; instead I started running 2 miles everyday. Till now I follow a balanced fatless diet. Apart from all I’ve used Garcinia Capsules, an ayurvedic product which is completely free from side effects. It helped me a lot. For further details you can visit this site LINK REMOVED

Furst thing, watch what you are saying...

Hi Platinum

First thing, stop 'trying' - you either ARE losing weight or you ARE NOT losing weight. There is no such thing as trying, you are either doing something or you are not!

So, what you need to do is to make a decision, I mean truly make a decision....don't leave yourself an exit clause for when the going gets tough!

The reality is that weight loss is not expensive, companies with products to sell and marketing is what makes it expensive and there is no need to buy any of these things to be healthy and slim.

Lose weight and get healthy, my solution....
Make the decision
Set your goals, read them at least twice a day
Find someone to be accountable to
Stay away from negative unsupportive people
Walk daily 20 - 40 mins
Eat only fresh food
Eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables
Eat less or no animals
Reduce or eliminate dairy
Eggs occasionally
No poisons (alcohol, caffeine, sugar, chocolate, chips, etc)
Stop and rest, take time out in your day to simply sit and clear the mind
Get a good sleep each night
Focus on the good stuff and eliminate negativity

Healthy food and lots of fruit and vegetables can be expensive but by cutting out the costs of everything else you are buying now you will actually be spending less!

I don't believe that the facts and figures support the theory that 1lb per week weight loss is more effective, this is just a generally held belief. You can find people who have been successful at weight loss that have followed both fast and slow processes just as you can ones that have failed with both methodologies. I think that success is more about your thinking and your beliefs.

A quick way to lose weight and feel great.....
Do two whole weeks of fruit and vegetables only, no alcohol, no dairy, no caffeine, just fruit and vegetables and lots of water. You can also drink hot water and lemon or herbal teas.

The first few days can be challenging but after 2 weeks people will be telling you how amazing you look and you will be feeling just fabulous, after 2 weeks go onto the above regime and the weight just keeps falling away and you will have loads of energy too!!

Go for your dreams:)

hi you want an easy and the cheap way to maintain your weight. The best way to be fit without going jim is skipping. I heard that 10 minutes skipping is equivalent to 30 minutes jogging. so try it in your routine, defenately you wil get some benefit.

Quick diet

Hello,

maybe you should try Copenhagen Diet? It lasts only 13 days. I've tried many other diets but none has even come close to the success. I must confess first 3 days was a nightmare, I was hungry and angry but since 4th day it was ok. During the first week I've lost bigger part of my 15 lbs, second week was more "steady".

yeah trying to lose weight quick is not a good thing, it slows down your metabolism and then in the end when you go back to your usual eating habbits which results in gaining the weight back OR gaining even more
