True or False??

hey everyone... Ive been having trouble with a few things. Maybe you all can help.

1. I have been controlling portions, counting calories, and working out daily for about a week. Last Friday my weight was at 131lbs. I weighed myself today and I am at 125lbs. Needless to say, I was thrilled but It got me thinking. I was hoping to loose 2lbs. a week but 6??? Did I really loose that much weight or does the fluctuation have to do with something else? And if I really did loose the weight, is it healthy to loose 5lbs. a week??

2. I read recently that working out late at night is not effective and can mess with sleeping habits. Has anyone found any truth in this?

3. I also read that jogging or running can give you a "runner's pooch" on your lower abdomin. Say it isnt so! Sounds like bs to me. Any truth in it??

1. Water weight

2. False. Work out when you can. If it causes you to lose sleep, then try and fit it in at another time. Losing sleep is not typical of later workouts

3. False

Some of it might be water weight, you could have weighed yourself last time at night/with lots of fluid in you/full bowel, you probably lost some fat, could have lost some muscle.

Good job though! It wasn't ALL water weight I don't think, so congrats!

Yes, if you exercise like an hour within going to bed you could have trouble sleeping. It is just as effective as working out in the morning or during the day, if you feel like exercising at night do it! I do because I don't have enough energy in the morning.

3. I also read that jogging or running can give you a "runner's pooch" on your lower abdomin. Say it isnt so! Sounds like bs to me. Any truth in it??

I've never heard of this, some people just store fat in that area, cardio would help to reduce this. So yep I'd say that would be false.

I think that little 'pooch' is cute anyway

Okay, what the hell is a runners pooch?

Okay, regarding the weight, make sure you weigh yourself at the same time. For example, in the morning. Also, you lose the most during the first few weeks of any dieting/workout routine. And, best time to do cardio is in the morning right after you wake up due to low glycogen levels so your body is forced to burn more fat, at least that's what studies say.

Eh... this is sort of true. For instance, if I were to have a BMR of 1900 cals a day (which I do), this means I am burning roughly 90 calories an hour just being alive (lets not add in the walking and movement crap). So, if by 5 o'clock I've only eaten 1000 calories (which is about right) and I wake up at 6 o'clock, that is 880 calories (minimum, because I do more than just breath for 11 hours, regardless of what my boss thinks) of that 1000 used, leaving 120 to be burned up by my cardio at 5:30. Again, the exact science to it sucks... and this is OVERLY simplified and the MAIN point is, the difference in cals burned is negligible. Exercise should be done when it works with your schedule.

I wouldn't call it a myth though... but it isn't as effective as saying "You must do it in the AM because that's the only time it will work"... and I know you didn't say that either. Just want to make it clear to someone reading this that it'll work regardless.

EDITED: Studies have also shown that a fasted body in the morning won't go to fat but will catabolize muscle instead (since Muscle is a more favorable energy source than fat). So for every study you show me that it's effective in the AM, I can show you one that it isn't effective in the AM.

I stick by fasted cardio.
I haven't seen written evidence, but I lost more fat when I exercised in the morning on an empty stomach. I then did resistance training at night when I had more energy.
And I know this because I get my body fat checked and i started to get real improvements when I started cardio in the morning.

But I definatly agree with you. exercise is awesome no matter what time of the day! Whenever it works for you thats good. It just so happens I like working out in the morning because I like to get it out of the way.

Although, could you give me the source that says that fasted cardio catabolizes muscle instead of burning fat? Because sounds like a bit of hogwash, oh and dont bother posting a internet link; I only believe stuff I read in books.

Books aren't cutting edge, and that isn't where you would find something like this anyways. Take them for what they are worth, but published articles with studies behind them are credible.

Here is one I've found, but n size is very small

This one is even less helpful but suggests that fat in the system with a pre-fed is actually more advantageous than a fasted feed (nothing about catabolizing here)

Again, I say do whatever works for you as a healthy individual, because you proved my point exactly to a T. There will be people who swear by it and then there will be people who say it's counter productive. I say, I don't care when, just as long as you realize the importance of it. You are seeing results (measurable results to boot) and that's the idea.

I agree. However, much like austin I've seen the largest losses (lol wording) by doing am cardio. But you're right, excersize is amazing any time during the day =D
