Trouble Losing weight, for a long time now

Hey guys,
I am 6'4" 240lbs 20yr college student. I have always been fat, although my height hides it, but 240 is way too much, and I feel it. To be brief, last year when I started college I lost 20lbs from 220-200 between september and early december. During this time I only lifted weights, which I had not done much before. I did not bench press( don't know if this has anything to do with it) Also I guess I ate less, but it wasn't like I was watching calorie intake, in fact sometimes I would skip breakfast and stuff. SO really I don't know how I lost the weight. Then from december-june I gained the 20lbs back. I guess I went to the gym a little less than before, and maybe ate a little more, but I also played basketball more often.

Then last summer I went to india, and gained another 10lbs, as the food was very heavy and full.

Since then I realized I needed to lose weight and tried to go running first thing in the morning. This lasted for a few weeks, but then school got in the way. Now I've gotten to lifitng a little, running a little, working on my vertical leap, and playing basketball 2/3 times a week for 2hrs.--but I haven't lost anything. My normal diet is cereal (honey nut cheereos, 2 boiled eggs-breakfast, a turkey sandwich and juice-lunch burrito/chicken sandwich-dinner)

I try not to eat fats and sugars, and I think I do ok in this regard, but I drink juice a lot with meals-does this have an effect?

So basically my goal is to get down to 200lbs, and be able to dunk on a 10' rim. I hate running, cuz I get bored really fast, I tried HIIT but I get too tired, so is there anything I can do besides running? like jump rope or basketball or something?

thanks for all the help.

also I have a problem with consistency, just because school gets in the way. The first few weeks of each quarter are a breeze, but after that i have less time

Spend some time reading the stickied threads - especially in nutrition, on topic and exercise... those threads will give you a good idea of a projected amount of calories to shoot for... and then keep track ina program like ..

Until you figure out where your calories are coming from - it's tough to know where to make adjustments..

Juice can definitely add up the calories in your diet every day!! One glass of orange juice can be as much as 300 calories. That is a lot!

Happymamto6 is right, juice is very high in sugar and calories. Juice is kind of a "silent killer" so to speak because a lot of people think it is healthy, which it is because it has a lot of vitamins and minerals, but the sugar more than makes up for that.

As far as what you are doing for exercise, I actually don't recommend running to lose weight. Running puts your heart rate in the 75%-85% range which is more in the endurance training zone. For fat loss you want your heart rate to be more in the 65%-75% range. What I typically recommend for people as "cardio" for fat loss is just a fast paced walk. Not that stupid "speed walk" lol just a good speed about 3 miles an hour. Also, you are definitely on the right track with basketball and stuff like that, exercise can be any type of activity, it doesn't have to be on a treadmill or in a gym.

I am a personal trainer, nutritionist, and weight loss specialist and have been for the past 7 years. If you have any general questions feel free to ask me on here so everyone can benefit from it. (MOD EDIT) because people get mad when I talk about my job on here because they claim I am a "low life that is just promoting myself" which can not be further from the truth, I just want to help people, so anyone that has any questions feel free to ask.

That your motivated to get to a healthy weight is just so inspiring - so many just don't care!

One simple thing to add to your efforts is not eating late at night. If this is easy for you, great, keep it up! In 35 years of teaching fitness I think eating late at night is one of the worst things we do to ourselves. By the way, Oprah swears by this as her number one tool in losing weight. Pick a time - for me it's 7pm - and just say no to any food.

Actually, this has been disproven 10 ways past Sunday. When you eat means nothing at all. Your body doesn't shut down when you go to sleep. All you have to do is pay attention to calories in vs calories out.

your BMI is 47 which is dangerously obese, moderator or not I don't think someone who is dangerously obese should be telling weight loss professionals they are wrong and claiming you know what you're talking about.

just saying

My personal weight and my journey doesn't change the science Ben. Eating past a certain time means nothing to weight loss. If it did then answer the question of what is the magic hour and provide medical studies with that fact.

My point wasa that you are more out of shape than most people on here and claim to know what you are talking about. And you viciously bash anyone else who suggests any type of solution. I could help you tremendously if you would allow me to but I know you would never do that.

Simply eating late isn't the problem, its the types of foods people typically eat late at night, junk and snak food. The truth is you need to eat every 2-3 hours to keep your metobolism fast, if you are up later then you need to eat later, but eat good food.

Well, I didn't quite ask for your help but thank you for offering.

I stated that the myth of eating late was false. If you would like, I can post links to the studies showing this has been shown to be wrong.

Would you like to keep pointing out my weight to me Ben? Since you don't know me or my journey or what I have done, that could just backfire on you.

I dont know why anyone is bashing your stats Jericho i think your progress is commendable. where you start is not as important as the will is to get you where you want to go. your doing awesome so far. I would kill to lose 30 plus pounds. every pound is a fight.

I come off agressive. Even I can see I do, it's a bad side effect of passion but seriously? I know I'm doing good. I've slowed a lot and back peddled but all that is temporary. I'm still moving forward!

Thanks for the kind words.

If someone has never had a weight problem, why would you trust their advice on how to lose weight? That's like asking a virgin how to break a sex addiction.

Just saying.

I'll start taking your advice seriously when you...

A) Learn how to spell.
B) Proofread your posts before you hit "Submit Reply"
C) Reach the age of 18.

And, here's a tip - if you are going to claim something as a fact, try and back it up with some statistics, information, links, references, etc. The moderators on this website almost ALWAYS back up their information with references, which is something that you have failed to do. So, before you start claiming that THEY don't know what THEY'RE talking about, try taking a look in the mirror first.

ha ha are you serious? Why trust someone's advice who has never had a weight problem?!! Are you seriously saying this?!! Maybe because they know what they are doing and have never let it become a problem!!! Are you saying that you would never let a surgeon opperate on you if they haven't had surgery on themselves? And really you're going to judge my weight loss adviced based on a few mis spellings and grammer errors or the fact that I didn't proof read something? Wow.... I am a weight loss specialist not an english teacher. But whatever buddy, I try to help you guys and all you do is fire off a bunch of nonsence. You clearly have issues and can't be helped because you spend more time making up excuses and being jeleous than you do actually taking and applying advice. You guys are a joke and this whole forum is a joke, I'm out

Why is it that when the attitudes and mentalities that people demonstrate towards members on this forum are thrown back into their own faces, they get all defensive and then immediately decide to leave the forum?

Nobody is judging your advice by your lack of ability in the grammar department. We're judging your advice because it's wrong. And, for the record, I don't believe that you are a weight loss specialist. If you were, you'd realize that the advice you are arguing against is actually helpful and factually correct. Hmm, some weight loss specialist you are.

Ok, when did I ever argue against anyones advice or say anything any of you said was wrong? You told me I am wrong when the fact is I am healthy and everyone I work with has lost weight and achieved their goal or is in the proccess of doing so. There are plenty of facts and scientific backing to what I do and I do have certifications for my credentials and all that. I also have many many people who are testiments to my success with them. I never said that any of you were wrong, I simply sudgested a better option and you flipped out and called me a low life and many more things, so say and think what you want, I wanted to help but clearly no one here wants help so I'm out.

I thought you were out the first time you said it. :seeya:
