Tri training advice needed

Ok, so here's the deal. I have always been a recreationally fit person but really want to get into triathlons, just for the challenge. I did a try-a-tri last summer, but didn't train for it and now I'm more motivated to do longer distances. I am a terrible runner, decent swimmer and slightly more decent cyclist (strong legs). I do have some weight to lose as well, and so far it's been coming off at a good rate with just exercise and healthy eating (imagine that!).

So middle of February I started to do a lot of running trying to get in 6 days a week plus weight training on alternate days. I started by only being able to do 1 mile at 6mph, and am now up to 3 miles at 6.4. The tris I want to do have a 5km (3mile) run, so I'm at the right distance. Now, my question is should I keep trying to up the speed and stick to 3 miles, or keep upping the distance? How should I start to work in biking? Should I just do bricks, or dedicate one specific day to cycling only? The cycling distance is 20-30km.

Sorry if this is a dumb or obvious question! The first tri I want to do is end of June.

Thanks for any help or input!

Welcome! There are some training programs at beginnertriathlete, but I do not have enough discipline to follow them. Basically, I try to work out at least 1 event per day, preferably 2 when feasible. Focus on the bike and run as they are your weak areas and they account for the longest time and energy of a tri. Go for distance and time, not for speed. If you develop the endurance, the speed will take care of itself. Try to run for 30 minutes nonstop, then 45, then 60. Eventually you will cover more distance in those time spans. As for cycling, make sure you can cover the distance and try to get in as much distance as you can. The distance should take you about an hour, so train to ride for 1+ hour at a time. Don't get too concerned with bricks - bike and run combinations - the truth is it hurts to run after biking no matter how much you have prepared. Be in as as good of shape as you can, but most importantly, enjoy the triathlon event and have fun as you will have earned it.
