Treadmills?

I was talking to my mom about treadmills so that I can always get some cardio in, even when the weather is awful(it always is.), and she said that treadmills are no good for training.
This is because she thinks that they are giving you momentum so you aren't working as hard and therefore not getting as much excercise.

I'm not saying its wrong, I was just wondering purely out of curiosity.

Also, what can I do for a cardio workout when the weathers too bad to go out? Its often icy in the winters, and theres lots of rain because of where we live.

If you set the treadmill for 1% incline, it will simulate road running. You can go as hard and get your heart rate as high as you want with a treadmill.

I had a trainer that used to tell me to put it at 7% and walk briskly - using my arms also - for 30 minutes because this gets your heart rate up just like running hard. If the weather is bad outside then there is nothing wrong with using a treadmill.

i personally think that treadmill can be a very good workout, the only thing that can be a problem is that you can hurt your knees just as bad as you can hurt them while you exercise running outdoors. i would suggest looking at eliptical machines which are better. i use an eliptical at the gym 3-4 times a week for the last 3 years and im feeling great :)

I always run at 1.5-2% incline. As long as you are working hard it is still a good workout.
Treadmills are actually better than road running as the platform is designed to minimise the impact on the joints.
