Treadmill vs. the real thing?

I was wondering if any of you guys know how running on a treadmill stands against running outside?
I beleive everybody has noticed that running outside the same distance is always more difficult.
Is it only because of the wind and the surface or are there other factors to deal with? Does the engine of a treadmill takes over a part of our body weight when running on one?
Do we need to add some more miles if we run on a treadmill? How do you calculate the difference?

dont quote me on this but i heard that running outside is equivalent to 1.0 incline on the treadmill.

personally i cant stand running on a treadmill.
that stupid timer drives me nuts!!!!
 
Yes, I've read that, too. Now I'll set my incline to 1%. Since I’ve been running outside, I feel like I need I need to challenge myself more on the treadmill. I’ll run longer and faster on the treadmill. Your body will let you know, how much harder you should push yourself on the treadmill.

I like my treadmill anytime weather does not permit to run outside. But I really enjoy the outdoors more.
 
When I run on a treadmill I'm always watching the dial thinking "When can I get off this thing?" Also, you don't get anywhere. That frustrates me.

However, when I run outside I get so hot I feel like I'm going to pass out after a few minutes. It's also hard to carry water if you're running outside, but on a treadmill you can have it next to you the whole time.

They both have ups and downs, it all depends.
 
Well, by using the treadmill, less pressure is put on your knees because the treadmill absorbs the power that is being put on your knees and other leg joints everytime you take a step (if your running hard). I actually prefer outside running, but i guess the treadmill might be safer :\
 
Actually, you were right about the engine of the treadmill taking over. If you think about it, a lot of what is involved in running outside is pushing yourself forward. When you're on a treadmill that forward momentum is gone. The treadmill is actually pulling your foot back, instead of you pushing your body forward.
 
I've noticed that if I change my stride to be more 'bouncy' or drive my knees up higher; running on the treadmill is a lot easier.

Anyway, I've always gone outside to run; never touched a treadmill until about 2 weeks ago. For me, the treadmill seems a lot harder.

I think maybe it's just what you are used to?
 
id say running is better.
like others said, instead of you using energy to push yourself forward with your legs , the treadmill does it for you... making it easier and more effecient for your body ... thus making it work less hard and not getting your heart rate up as high.

also with running ... you have hills ... depending where u run. but hills get your heartrate up wayyy higher.. which is good.. depending on how long and steep the hill is. and also not having a level ground makes things harder, making your body work harder.

but whatever floats your boat ... theyre both effective, in my opinion running being more.
