Treadmill vs. Stairmaster?

I posted this in another seciton but i think this section might be a little more appropriate...whats better? treadmill or the stairmaster/elliptical machine or whatever...when trying to lose weight? pros and cons of each if any?

Find a hilly trail to walk every day, you'll get better results than either a treadmill or a stair climber

I have used them all and find the elliptical works for me. I found both the treadmill and stairmaster more boring than the elliptical and harder on my joints. If you can run try that. I used to before my back and hip went bad on me. I could get lost in running and it never felt like I was exercising until it was all over. I almost get in that same zone on the elliptical. You have to spend $500 or more for a decent elliptical, which is probably the same with a treadmill and stair climber. I've stuck with the elliptical for 8 years now and one of the secrets to getting fit and losing weight is to do something that you like on a consistent basis. So I guess the real answer to your question is which one do you like best?

yea going and finding a hilly road isnt really an option I live in downtown atlanta in my dorms...and the only time I have to work out is after 9 pm...and my gym has an elliptical machine as well...yes those are more fun actually...but I guess my question is...is 10 mins on the treadmill equal to 10 mins on the elliptical machine?

Treadmill is way better then stair master.

Pros
- Easy to use (less chance of injury)
- You can do HIIT by switching the speed intervals ( I run 3.0 MPH for a minute, then enter 9.0 MPH for the next minute and so on for 20 minutes).
- You can set a drink on a treadmill (not a stairmaster)
- time flies alot faster on these in my opinion.

But I use the stair master when I get bored and wanna do something new for that day.

That's an excuse. If you can work out at 9 PM then you could work out at 5 AM.

And why can't you go for a walk at 9PM? You live in a dorm, so walk around the block at a fast pace then up the stairs in the dorm and do laps like that.

Treadmill for comfort, elliptical for max calorie burn

The treadmill is for walking or running (duh)....that is the most natural movement you could do, while minimizing risk of repetitive strain injury, which is common for people who use the stair machine a lot (can cause knee problems)

you can burn about 5-7% more calories with an elliptical trainer vs the treadmill, at the same percieved level of exertion. I've proven this with a heart rate monitor. Jogging I can maintain 155 beats per minute for a half hour, thats the fastest I can go without feeling out of breath. on the elliptical I can maintain 165-170 beats per minute without getting out of breath, so I am doing more work by incorporating the upper body movement, yet I don't feel I am working any harder.

That said, I still prefer the treadmill - I can get a "runners high" and go into cruise control on the treadmill, but I've never felt that way on the elliptical.
