treadmill versus road running

I've got my first 5K in 3 weeks. The weather has been terrible but I got the chance this weekend to run on a treadmill. I took advantage of it because I knew I really needed to run. I noticed that it seemed a lot more difficult than running on the road. Is there a reason for this? I went ahead and went the distance but wasn't too impressed with the whole treadmill experience. Thoughts?

" more difficult " in what way exactly ?

It's kind of subjective I guess. It just felt like the distance never passed and the pace I keep easily on the road was really tough to keep on the treadmill. I guess it's just being used to one then training on the other. Maybe it was just that I had the numbers right there in front of me versus not having them on the road.

thanks that is encouraging to me....I run on the treadmill all the time and am considering trying the road. lol I know it sounds funny but it is true. :)

treadmill = squirrel :drooling1:
road = RUNNER :p

I use a treadmill for HIIT work, and hill work, but the experience of a "run" is wonderful. It's the GPS effect! Yep- global positioning, movement, scenery, makes all the differece.

i am surprised by this statement. i'm wodering if by "difficult" you simply mean you're unaccustomed to running a treadmill???

i believe the treadmill is the easiest and least like the activity it's emulating of all the cardio equipment available because essentially all you do is keep pace with the moving surface. in road running you actually have to propel your body and it's weight, while treadmilling is just a matter of "shuffling your feet" to the motion of the ramp.

so to get a better simulation, i would suggest elevating the ramp.
