Training program for 9 year old boy - Parent needs advise

I am hoping people can provide some advise as my 9 year old son has decided he wants to start a training program to increase his endurance and strength for AFL (Australian Rules) football.

He has swimming lessons 1 day per week and plays AFL for both his school and local club so trains 2 times per week and plays 2 games. He also gets the usual school yard excercise runing aroung playing sports during lunch breaks etc.

I am wary of him performing repetitive or strenuous training at this age so was hoping to put together a basic stretching / strength / endurance program that he can follow as he is keen to do this so I would prefer to ensure he does it correctly.

He is a lean build so at times lacks confidence playing against stronger boys, but I feel a good program that I can help him with and even join in with him will help his fitness as well as his confidence.

Thanks in advance.

Body weight exercises would be recommended. Push ups, pull ups etc. At 9 I'm not sure if weights are a good idea.

If I'm not mistaken weights are not recommended until a person reaches 12 years of age (at least).

The bodies of a growing body are fragile, and hence are more prone to injury.

Just a clarification... I don't want him to use weights, hence my statement "I am wary of him performing repetitive or strenuous training".

I am trying to put together a suitable body weight, stretching etc program that will improve his endurance / strength and his confidence when playing against stonger boys. I don'want it to be too intense as he already gets quite a bit of exercise running around... just something simple to help him feel better about himself and his game.

How about skipping? It improves fitness and requires concentration also helps with co-ordination (skip right, left, both, right, left, both, etc).

Besides that there isn't much I can think of, just going for a jog, doing some pushups and chinups (do you have one/could you get a chin up bar?) would be great.
