Hello,
I want to join the Army since I am a lazy <expletive here> programmer and I'm tired of living this way. I'm bored out of my skull and want the complete opposite of my current lifestyle.
Anyway, let me describe myself a bit first. I'm 26, 6 feet tall (meaning 5'11"...you know guys like to buffer their height), and at the time of posting I am 243.5 pounds. I have not really had ANY excersise in about 2-3 years.
When I was in college I used to walk there and back (3.58 miles according to mapquest). When I walked there I would always have my backpack which originally had random books and often a 2L bottle of pop in it. I would estimate weight at around 70 pounds...I'm probably underestimating it. Eventually I was carrying a laptop and various books but the weight would be comparable. Also of note is that this distance was full of large hills. While I was walking this with little difficulty, I was never any good at running.
Ok, now for my questions. I just started running a week ago. I wake up at 0430, I do as many push-ups as I think I can handle (without pushing too hard because it's my first week), and then I do the same with sit-ups. Once I'm done this I go to the park which is about a one minute walk away and I run one complete lap around it and walk/run the second lap. Now I have been ok with this since it is the first week and I didn't want to overdo it, but what should I start doing now? Should I only run until I feel like I don't want to anymore, run until I fall down and can't move for 5 minutes, or pick a good distance and run when I can / walk when I can? How hard is too hard to push myself?
I run on an empty stomach because if I eat before running, even hours before, I feel like I will vomit. Should I stop if I feel like this? Also, I feel extremely tired all day now and seem to count the minutes until I can go to sleep (which is good in a way since I'm normally an insomniac...wonder why lol.)
Another point of confusion for me is that I have been gaining weight. A week ago I was down around 232-235. Now I am 242-245. 10 pounds in a week seems a bit much, but then I don't know much about exercising. Is this bad or completely normal? I am certainly hoping to lose weight as well as get my strength and endurance up.
Before I even apply I want to be able to run 5km without feeling like death, and I also need to be able to do maybe 25 pushups and situps without pause (I can do like 1 push-up and 5 sit-ups as of now.) If anyone can help me out with my questions I will be very grateful.
Thanks.![Big grin :D :D](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7)
Edit: Btw, I've been running everyday but from what I've read on here it seems like running is similar to lifting whereas I need to stop once in a while to allow the body to heal. Is this correct? How often should I run then? Is 5 days a week ok, or is that too much?
