Sport Tragic, life-changing experience for a new member

Sport Fitness
Hello all,

For the past couple weeks I've been reading the forums and finally decided to register after reading Maverick494's post about working out and being sick...This may be a long story but I would not want this to happen to anyone else. I started working out in 10th grade and became obsessed with it. I was a workout fanatic and had a nice lean muscular build(but i was eating a lot of calories and whatever i wanted). When i entered my 1st yr of college my diet changed drastically and my menstruation stopped. I was fine for a whole year working out religiously and eating salads(still had plenty of energy and natural body weight was 105-110)...it was not until my second yr of college when i noticed something terrible was wrong...i was so weak and dropped more than 10 lbs in a month(down to 88 lbs. I noticed all the muscle I had was gone. I was so cold and tired all the time when i finally told my grandmother "I think im dying". She took me seriously and we went to the doctor to do bloodwork...my surprise i was anemic and had developed autoimmune heptatitis from being malnutritioned for so long...
i cried and cried for weeks because i had no idea being so malnutritioned could cause this disease...my body had gone deprived of nutrients for so long that my antibodies started attacking my liver(autoimmune hepatitis is not contagious btw). I immediately went to a sports nutritionist and he had me eating so many calories i was sick the first fer weeks high protein high carb anything i wanted. My body fat was 6.3% which is fatal for a girl. After months on the diet my body started building back up muscle and weight went up and i no longer have hepatitis. I am now 20 yrs. old working at a health club weighing 106.5(all muscle) with 6.9%bf(still low but im naturally lean). I am in the process of gaining more mass and maybe competing in the future... I feel telling my story will help many other ppl who have or may be going through what i did...If i wouldnt have gotten helped when i did i would be dead by now. I wasnt anorexic but my obsessive complusive desire and lil knowledge of nutrition almost cost me my life... i am now majoring in dietetics to become a registered dietician...IF ANYONE IS GOING THROUGH THIS SEEK HELP IMMEDIATELY! I appreciate being able to tell my story and if anyone has any questions plz ask me! rememeber EAT EAT EAT

Thx. I am so glad my grandmother took me seriously too. It actually happened around thanksgiving of last year and all of the symptoms hit me at once. What really made me tell my story was reading posts about ppl eating 1000 cals r less...made me have flashbacks of how i felt around this time last year...i was a whithering walking zombie.

Wow. I'm really glad you're ok. And I thought my dieting situation was bad! I suppose a reality check once in a while is important for a person to truly understand what they have.

Like everyone else has said....wow! Thats a sad story but, thankfully one with a happy ending!

Good luck with what you're trying to achieve now, sounds great :)

Thanks for posting your story Ashley. I recognise a lot of it and I think it can be really helpful for members in situations like this :)
