Too much weight loss?

Pained

New member
Hi, I'm new here, my name is Stephanie. I hope this is the right area to post this in. I'm 22 and 5'9". I decided to diet because I've been kind of chubby ever since I was little and just recently it started getting bad, I'm currently at the heaviest I've ever been. I just made 22 (May 24th) and I decided it was a good time to start changing my life a bit.

When I started, which was eight days ago, I was 210.2 pounds. I weighed myself this morning and I'm 201.6. Before I started dieting I read it's bad to lose more than about 2-3 pounds per week and I've lost nearly 9 pounds in one week. I haven't been starving myself. My main problem was that I snacked all day long and drank soda constantly. I removed both and replaced them with gum and water. I kinda call it the "gum and water diet." However I do eat regular meals, just healthier ones. I decided not to start excersizing yet because if this kind of weight loss is so unhealthy I don't want to hurt myself even more.

So, my question is: Should I eat a bit more and slow it down, or should I just be thankful I'm losing so much so quickly?

Sometimes you can lose a lot of water weight right in the beginning if you cut the sodium content of your diet (which is in sodas). I'll lose about 6 pounds the first week when I get on a healthy diet and then it drops to just 2 or 3 the following weeks.

But there are more knowledgeable people around, so let's see that they have to say!

Please say again why you aren't exercising? you think your diet is unhealthy therefore you don't want to injure yourself?

What will take teh weight off and keep it off -is a lifestyle change which incorporates healthy eating and exercise... Not just gum and water and occassional meals.

Spend some time reading around the forum - especially the stickied threads in on topic, nutrition and exercise.

9lbs in one week if you're going from eating crap to healthier fare isnt uncommon, but don't expect to to keep up - 1 percent of your body weight is a good goal to shoot for.

If i were you -and I'm an crabby old broad ... I'd eat more - take it slower and work in a healthy exercise habit.. your better off eating at a high a calorie level s your body can stand and still loose that 1 percent so that way in 30lbs or so - you've got some room to adjust your calories to accommodate your slimmer self

It's water weight. Don't be surprised if you see no movement on the scale for the next couple of weeks, while your "real" weight catches up.

Personally, what worked for me best was to keep my calories mostly constant and add exercise as my weight dropped.

since you're eating regular, healthy meals, I agree you're probably losing it from increase in water and decrease in soda/sodium.

one thing you should be careful of...

chewing gum can cause tummy bloat... and too much sugarless gum can give you the hershey squirts... so moderation in all things -including gum..
