Sport Too much water? Always thirsty.

Sport Fitness
Hi, first I want to say that I have made a doctor's appointment, but it's not until mid-January, so I wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts for me.

I've always known that I drink a lot of water, but didn't think much of it. I've recently started using a Nalgene bottle, which holds 32 oz., so roughly half as much a a person needs in a day.

Well, I end up refilling the bottle throughout the day and usually drink 4-6 bottles a day. So, 2-3 times the amount a person needs. And I'm still thristy after this.

If I do only drink 8 glasses of water a day I feel rather dehydrated. Like I said, I have a doctor's appointment, so I'll ask then, I just wanted some opinions. Googling I've only come up with diabetes, but I was wondering if maybe it could have to do with a thyroid issue? Or maybe it's not an issue at all and I should just keep drinking my water! Any thoughts would be appreciated.

It's hard to reach water toxicity unless you are obsessive/compulsive or trying to drink as much water as you possibly can.

Main thing is getting enough, and just drinking it. Its not a bad idea to have an amount in mind each day, of course, but if you go over this limit for the average person, it wont have any bad effects on training or health. The worse thing that may happen on average is you see the bathroom......big whoopie :)) )

Just do it and drink it. Its nothing too complicated. ;)

Thanks for the replies! Derwyddon is right, I wasn't so much concerned that I'm drinking a dangerous amount of water, I'm more concerned that I'm still pretty thirsty even though I drink 1-1.5 gallons a day, and really don't want to drink much more then that. Just kind of worried there might be a medical condition involved.

It is possible being thirsty most of the time, there MAY be a medical condition present, there is no doubt in the "possiblity" in this. Wouldnt hurt to see a doc to be sure and get a checkup.

Let us know how this turns out after you see your doc in January.

Wish you the best of luck in all that you do!

I don't think there is any way a normal person can drink water excessively to a point of death or serious injury. I agree you should see a doctor if you're concerned. I drink quite a lot of water myself. I have a 2L bottle at home, and I fill it up like 4-5 times throughout the day.

You should probably see the doctor. Excessive thirst can be a sign of diabetes, but more than likely, it's not as serious as that.

Do you consume a lot of sodium? This could be the cause of your thirst.

Your best bet is to go to the doctor.

Heh I don't see how you guys drink more than a gallon a day, anytime I drink more than 2 liters a day my piss is white and i have to take a piss 6 times a day

As you know Phate, the color of the urine "can be" an indication of hydration. I assume if you mean "white" you mean clear, if this is the case, you know "more than likely" your getting enough water......HEHEHEHE, and you get to see this first hand several times a day......LOL..........> :)

Best wishes to you!

I'm probably smaller than you phate and i drink over a gallon a day.

Good for you, but I know my body and know that when im pissing out practically pure water, and using the urinals 6-7+ times a day, then thats too much. I do fine with 2 liters a day, no matter what "science" says.

I see you are trying to lose weight from your sig. Are you taking any diet pills? I know when I was taking Hydroxicut Hardcore it made me crave water and I was drinking a 16 oz glass about every 20 mins throughout most of the day.

This was too much and I would start to get nauseous mid day. After looking up the symptoms, I cut back on the water that took care of it.

Nope, no diet pills.

Thanks for all the opinions. I suppose I'll just leave it to the doctor and let you all know how it goes!

How is your urine production? Do you have a dry mouth or how do you describe yourself as "dehydrated"? It could be a mental or stress thing. Also is that plain tap water your drinking, bottled mineral water or carbonated/tonic water?

Its actually "water intoxication" not "water toxicity", remember the makers of some silly game "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" where a woman died?

A basic rule of thumb about water is, Take your body weight and devide that into two. That is the amount by oz's your body should be getting per-day! Example: If you are 220lbs, you should be drinking 110ozs of water throughout the day! Hope this can help!

As has been stated here already the first thing that comes to mind is Diabetes. Thyroid disorders you would notice shifts in your weight primarily and shifts in your eating habits. There are also some hormonal disorders that come to mind as well, but there are usually other symptoms that go along with those that are hard to ignore. I am sure your doctor with test you for whatever your symptoms warrent. Best of luck to you and I hope that it is nothing. If it really bothers you go to a walk in clinic and they can do a glucose test, best to go in fasting though so they can check your levels before and after to see if there is any impaired function.

I don't drink neither

I think he was comparing the color of the urine to the color of the drink...
