Sport too much fibre in my diet ? - good or bad ?

Sport Fitness
Hi

I posted last week, about how i am on a low cholesterol diet (as recommended by my doctor) but as i am skinny (6ft2 and 80kgs) - and i exercise on spin bike daily, I am trying to bulk up now in other ways.

However, as I am eating a lot more fruit, veg and bread now, I am wondering whether i am getting too much fibre. I seem to be getting a lot more stomach bloating and discomfort now.

Is it possible to have too much fibre in my diet ?

Thanks

Not usually, no.

The bloating is most likely due to your sudden change in diet. This is very normal. It should go away after a couple weeks.

What do you mean by "discomfort"?

when i say discomfort - a bit of wind really and an uncomfortable bloated feeling.

as you say i will wait a few weeks and check for any change.

Thanks

i agree, your body will adjust in a couple weeks to the diet change. i don't think you could get too much fiber.

all that fiber will just make you spend more time in the bathroom. LOL

Be sure to get some insoluble fiber on that diet as well.

Ah, yes. All very standard. Best wishes.

As you adjust you will also notice how much better you feel, now that you're not distracted by the digestive adaptation :)

make sure your fluid intake (mostly water) is also up to snuff. you need to be well hydrated to keep the digestive system moving too.

thanks for all your advice guys.

Just one thing - what is 'insoluble' fibre ? what types of foods would those be ?

will try the ginger - sounds good.

I eat 80-100 grams of fiber a day with no problems. Of course, I eat 5000 calories, but still.

I think fiber can give you a little discomfort at first because you're not used to it. Just give it a little time.

Don't hate me because I'm regular

here I go...time to contradict you guys....lol

Having too much fiber in one's diet can cause problems. When the intake of fiber is too high, it can replace other energy and nutrients that you need in your diet. Some insoluble fibers bind certain minerals, including calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, and iron. Too much fiber can also cause abdominal discomfort, gas, and diarrhea, and block the gastrointestinal (GI) tract if you add too much fiber too fast.

So, go slowly to give your GI tract time to adapt and drink lots of fluids to keep the fiber soft. Also, choose a variety of soluble and insoluble fiber-rich food sources: fruits, vegetables, whole grain breads and cereals, and legumes (beans and peas).

Overall, fiber is a good thing.

well, Malkore's site does mention this....

I can totally relate too you man ive recently began watching what i eat. Unfortunately ive been eating ALOT of fiber yesterday i had 3 whole wheat tuna sandwiches 3 pears, a get lean bar with tons of fiber and whole wheat pasta with broccoli. I will never do this again. I was in school at the end of 1st period and it felt like my intestines were going to explode. It hurt soo much i cant even explain. It was like a combination of gas and pressure. Anyways, i went too my coach and he said too just drink way more water cause whats happening is the fiber is becoming hard in your intestinal tract thus causing severe pain. So from my experience id recommend you drink more fluids then normal. And if you feel something like what i felt its probably the lack of fluid intake.
