Too many Vitamin Supplements bad for you?

Hey everyone. I'm in the process of working out like crazy lately because I have a lot of spare time this summer. Needless to say, I'm watching my diet and my nutrients as much as possible and I'm working out about 2 hours a day but I ran into a question that I hope you guys could answer.

If I take too many vitamin supplements during the course of my day, is it bad for me? My schedule pretty much looks like this:

* 1 Vitamin C (500 mg) with my breakfast
* 1 Vitamin D (400 IU) with my breakfast
* 1 Strong Multi-Vitamin with my breakfast
* 2 Protein shakes (35 mg's of protein each) before and after my work out
* 1 Vitamin E (100 IU) with my dinner.

Would taking all these supplements in one day be bad for me?

If not, then are there any other vitamins or supplements that I should take?

Thanks in advance for your help! :)

Yes and no.

Yes it's bad because ideally you should get it from food.

No it's not bad because it really can't hurt you unless you really overdose on something.

In short, I think the vitamin market sort of plays on you a bit. You don't have to be taking vitamins to be healthy. Ideally you should be getting them all through food. You don't have to get each of the vitamins per day - just over the course of say a week or however long, you should be getting all of the vitamins in your system through food.

You might as well take one for the heck of it though if you're cutting just to be sure you got everything. But you don't have to if you're eating various types of food throughout the week.

The thing is, I probably get a decent amount of vitamins from food because I eat a lot but I take the vitamin supplements just as a back-up, in case I didn't get enough from my food on a particular day. So that's alright?

Also, I was wondering if there was any combination of vitamins that are bad for you when mixed together? For example, Vitamin E + Vitamin C etc.

Thanks for the help!

Actually, you CAN overdose on certain vitamins. Just google vitamin toxicity...and you'll get the rundown on the ones that could pose a problem.

typically its the fat soluble vitamins, A, D, E and K as the water soluble vitamins *usually* just get passed thru the urine if you have too much in the body.

There are some minerals that can be toxic as well...iron is one, and zinc too though you need a LOT of zinc to have that become a problem.

Yeah, that's understandable but it's not like I'm going to be popping 20 Vitamin E pills in one day.

I follow the directions on the back of the bottle which rarely say to take more than 1 vitamin a day.
