Sport Too many nuts?

Sport Fitness
YES! i have a friend who eats nuts all her life, and now she has diverticulitus (spelling) and thats bad! so be careful

, you got the spelling right Mustangdan.
You can have to much of anything, to many carrots and you can go yellow.
:p

Depends on the kind of nuts - if you're talking about salted peanuts or cashews then, yes you can eat WAY too much! they have a huge amount of fat in them and even a small bag can be somewhere close to 600 - 700 calories.

They are the one thing that I miss more than any other food *sigh*

How old is she? It is not common to develop diverticulosis and diverticulitis before the age of 40. She must have really eaten lots of nuts and must have been really constipated as well.

are you using nuts to supplement your fat intake?

if so, watch your calorie % from carbs/fat/protein. 25-30% of daily calories should come from fat...primarily poly and mono-unsaturated fats, with some saturated fat.

About a quarter cup, a couple times per week should be ok. Too many is definitely a risk, as they are high in calories and calories as we know, causes weight gain.

Well I have 100g of almonds a day! (612 cals - which contributes to 20% of my calories coming from fat). The weight is falling off though (2lb a week for past 5 or so weeks, which is great considering I'm not overweight in the first place).

Do you reckon I should drop the amount I have even though its clear they're ideal for keeping my diet balanced? I don't really get my fat from anywhere else, because I can be certain of exactly how many calories I get a day this way - rather than fish etc. which is harder to keep track of.

(sorry if I hijacked your thread a little)

Hang on... so diverticulitus is from not getting enough fibre? how is that related to nuts? (I personally think I get enough fibre anyway, so won't bother changing my meal plan :))

What types of nuts are good? I know almonds, but what about pecans, cashews, brazille nuts and hazlenuts? I have a big jar of salted mixed nuts that I like to snack on. Bad???

I know you asked this before, let me see if I can find the answer. I'm pretty sure unsalted, unroasted would be best. Plus I realized that the almonds I buy are 20oz for $9! Found some websites where you can buy them cheaper, I'll post those too. Give me some time.

Typically nuts are higher in fiber than a lot of foods. I don't see how eating a lot of nuts would lead to constipation or a lack of fiber.

Too many nuts in a day? Never.
