To many fitness instructors in my gym at one time

I love my gym ive been at it for 9months now. But ive noticed theres more and more instructors teaching people at the one time. Now im not against anybody doing there job. But its taking up machines that I want to use. The last straw was when they put up a punchbag that nobody else can use in the gym except them when training a customer(and theres a sign to say only to be used by instructors). Not that im going to use the punchbag but I just think this is mean. Am I in the wrong here or should I email the gym and complain?

I think it's reasonable to have a discussion with the manager or owner or even the instructors about equipment being used up when you're in the gym. Unfortunately, it's likely that the same time of day works for many people, so when the fitness instructors are booking clients, they kind of have to go with what works for their clients. There should always be a way for you to work out a 'sharing' strategy with the instructors. I always let other people go in between sets that my clients are doing... or I move on to something else if I can so that others who are working out can use the equipment. I would try to avoid having a long discussion with an instructor when they are in the middle of a session, but if you can catch them during their free time, you can work something out then. If they are aware that you use a particular piece of equipment, then they should be able to be flexible. They need to remember that it's not just the client in front of them that pays their bills, it's also the regular members that come in and pay for monthly memberships, so they need to keep those people happy as well!

As far as the punching bag goes... I don't think they're trying to be 'mean' but it often comes down to liability. They are probably trying to avoid having people hurt themselves by trying it out on their own. It can also be a selling point... to use it, you'd need to pay for an orientation or some personal training sessions.

Hope that helps... let us know what happens!

Every gym i've joined, the contract waived them of liability of injury on any equipment. After all, using weights is supposed to damage muscle fibers :)

So, yes I do think its BS that they put a bag in the open public area and you cannot use it. That's not the same as a 'ladies only' section of a gym to help the women feel at-ease lifting away from the burley guys.

I'd complain about both things and tell them you can find another gym if this is how they are running the place now.

Yeah I have to agree with you Mal. They are just lurking around now and the punchbags are the last straw. But in saying that I wont be using it.Its just the fact that im paying membership to the gym and theres equipment I cant use...very mean IMHO.
