To heavy to run?

i used t run 2 miles, 3 times a week when i weighed about 195-200, im now about 265lbs and im considering getting back to running. I used to be active and now im behind a desk and have put on a ton of weight. To me cardio is the fastest way to drop it, any other good methods? besides the usual "eat right and exercise" ?

Thanks

Also, im 40 years old and 6'1

I've recently joined gym .... (light weights, then 4 cardio machines)

on the treadmill, I started walking at a pace of 6km/hr for 10 min

every week, I have increased the pace and increased the duration by 1min

am now in the 5th week, and am walking at a pace of 7km/hr for 13 minutes ... any faster, and I will have to start jogging

will keep the pace at 7km/hr until 20 minute durations, then hopefully I will be able to jog the full 20 minutes (on the treadmill I train on, 8km/hr is a jog ... must however say that 7km/hr walking seems a lot harder than jogging at 8km/hr ... )

have been loosing 2kg/week and hopefully would have lost enough weight so that when I start jogging, I do not cause any knee injuries etc

However, I find the elliptical trainer to be a very good machine as there is not much strain on knees/ankles and gives a very good workout

If you want to be on the safe side for preventing injury, you may want to drop some weight first by doing other forms of exercise that are easier on the joints such as walking, swimming, cycling, elliptical, etc. Maybe make it a long term goal to get back into running.

That being said, if you have your physician's clearance, starting with a run/walk program might be a good option to get you back into running very gradually. Search for 'couch to 5k' or 'run walk programs' online and you'll find outlines of different running programs. The general idea is that you'd run for 1 min, then walk for 4-5 mins to start. Gradually, you'd increase the length of time running and decrease the length of time walking.
