Weight-Loss to eat or not to eat 2 hours before bed

Weight-Loss
I thought that eating to many calories before bed would be not so good because when you go to sleep you body slows it metabolism down and whatever you ate needs maybe 2 hours to digest (when your awake) but when your sleeping you metabolism is slow so it would be more apt to just go to fat storage

if that is true then would carrots and celary or vegitables plain be ok to eat the last 2 hours before bed

if it is not true then why is it not true

total myth...it doesnt matter when you eat as long as you are within your daily calorie limits.

Calorie counting wise, I'm not really sure if it matters when you eat as long as you are within your limit for the day. But eating late can effect how you sleep. So I guess it depends if you care about how rested you are. If you don't care, eat what you want before bed.

Electrodes connected to computers that show brain patterns, eye movements and even teeth grinding have been used to show how late eaters sleep patterns are effected. And really, I just don't understand how you can feel ok going to bed on a heavy stomach.

You eat late, then it will effect you deep sleep. What about reflux?

A light snack is fine, but of course it matters if you eat a huge meal right before bed.

mmmm

I dont know if its a myth or not.. I think its more of a personal choice some people sleep better when they have had time to do things after a meal.. take a walk wash the dishes, watch a Tv show etc... it also helps reduce heartburn and indigestion....

As a cohenite our program tells us to eat our meal 2-2.5 hours before sleeping.. this is meant to enable us to have a good nights sleep.. It also helps us organise our mealtimes becuase not many of us want to be up until midnight..:)

Goodluck..

We have started talking about two different topics. Does eating before bed cause you to gain weight and does it cause a poor sleep.

Yes, i agree, it can effect a night's sleep. I sleep awful on a full stomach but it has no effect my wieght loss. If i eat before bed but I'm still within my daily calories i will still lose weight. I will just get an awful sleep.

why is the next question why is that true

why if you eat a peice of cake before bed but still are in your diet calorie liimit that you dont gain weight why isnt it true that your more apt to gain becaues your body slows its matabolism down

does anyone have an article that is written somewhere on the internet that says that it just doesnt make sence to me No offence I hope

thanks

you already asked this question before. Steve answered it in another thread that it doesnt matter when you eat as long as you are below your calories for the day. If you dont like his answer try google to see if you can find an article.

.

I just simply wanted to have more input on the topic becuase the previous post it was old and people stopped looking at it my apolgies for any offence

could you tell me why this is true

You can't create something out of nothing.

Fat is stored energy.

If you're in a net caloric deficit for the day, regardless of when you eat said calories, what are you going to store fat with?

Nester,
What are your stats and goals? Can i ask how old you are. no, it really doesnt matter but i am curious. You could probably help yourself by reading the nutriotion sticky thread. It seems you are confusing some things and that thread could clarify some stuff.

my goals and what I do now

I am 31 I am trying a new diet where I eat only when im hungry(not emotional eating) and sometimes doing this I go to bed hungry because I thought the 2 hour thing was true but I would start eating carrots and celary the last 2 hours my goal is more to keep this up over the long term when eating a meal I will stop eating when I feal full enough. also I dont have a scale but I have maybee a 2 inch belly but I have been on a slightly differnet diet of excersize and stop eating when im full for about 6-8 months now but I just started the only eat when Im hungry plan I have an excized plan of I try to walk/jog comination (keeping my heart rate up for 30 minutes) 5 times a week but my unpredicable busyness (I live a sparatic life) so I try to do a mininum of 3 days a week 30min a day just keeping my heart rate up I have lost a fair amount so far my arms have been getting skinnyer along with other things. I am hopeing to just keep this up for a long peoid like years and to eventualy get skinny. people around me have noticed that I have lost a fair amount so I am fairly happy with what has happend so far

thanks

basically, no eating before bed does not make you gain weight.
The people here are right in saying this is correct as long as you are still in a calorie defecit or not over your calorie limit.
I can explain this.

Say you ate 1500 calories today and you walked a lot so altogether you burt 1800. Even if at 11pm you feel hungry or greedy and decide to eat a some crisps, worth 130 kcals, you wont gain weight. This is because, although you may go straight to bed and therefore burn very few extra calories, you have still had 1630 and burnt 1800. This means that earlier in the day your body used up 170 kcals of fat reserve, because it didnt have the energy otherwise. Basically, without the crips you would have used up 300 extra kcals than you had so your body would have burnt more fat. So eating late does not make you GAIN weight, but it may affect how much you LOSE.

Your body doesnt really understand time so its all just based on an eaten/consumed ratio.

Does this make sense?

Funnily enough, although I know this to be true, personally I find eating before bed detrimental. This could just be my weird body, or the fact that maybe it tips me over my calorie limits, who knows.

As stated it is logical to assume that as long as your calorie intake for the day is still at a deficit it would be impossible to "gain weight"..

But obviously it is also logical that it would effect "weight lost" because now you're reducing your gap between calories needed and calories taken in..

Now if those calories were a part of your overall eating plan for the day then you NEED to eat those calories and not starve yourself..
