Tired of being chunky!

Hi everyone,

I'm a 22 year old male from the UK.

Since about 13 years old I've always been (or considered myself to be) a bit chunky. At school I was teased a bit because of it by mates etc. and as a result my self confidence has taken a bit of a hit every since.

I'm getting to the stage now where I'm just frustrated at feeling bigger than I want to be and I'd like to do something about it now while (hopefully) it's potentially a bit easier (I was always told weight loss gets more difficult as you age?).

I'm currently about 18st (252lbs). I need to get an accurate measurement next time I'm at the gym. I've got a fairly big frame but I still feel like my weight should realistically be around the 15st (210lbs) area, if not a little lower.

As well as the motivation of just wanting to be more healthy & happier about my body image, I've also got a bit of a goal that I've always wanted to ask out a girl that I've kept in contact with from school, but because of my weight I've always felt self-concious about doing it. It's not that I really feel like me being thinner would actually mean that much to her, but it would to me, and I'm hoping it would give me the extra confidence boost to enable myself to do it.

I don't really want to be skinny as I quite like the fact that I'm quite well built, but I definetly need to loose a few pounds!

At the moment I go to the gym 4 times a week (one day on, one day off sort of arrangement) and generally do half an hour of fairly intensive cardio and some low weight, high repetition weight training, I've also been trying to eat better. I think my biggest problem at the moment is the weekends as I feel like they are my danger times food wise as there seems to be more temptation around than during the week.

Another thing I'm finding difficult is that with my job I just sit at a desk all day, not particularly active! Not really sure what I can do to remedy that one really apart from look for a new job, which isn't really an option at the moment.

Timescales wise I'd like to have lost the weight I want to by the end of the year if possible, but I'm not too fussed about how long it takes as long as I get it off! I feel like it'd be good to have a target date however, so maybe I need to do a bit of reading around here and work out what a sensible one would be for what I want to achieve.

Cheers for listening guys. :)

Welcome to the site!

Welcome.

It does take time and discipline but your goal is most certainly reasonable. You just have to be burning more calories than you eat. That is the bottom line. The question is how you are going to get yourself to do it. You will probably see here on this forum that there are about as many different ways as people. However you do it, you have to create a calorie deficit.

I find the Body Mass Index (BMI) to be a pretty good tool for figuring what you proper weight might be. Here is a BMI calculator from the US Centers for Disease Control. http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/bmi/adult_BMI/metric_bmi_calculator/bmi_calculator.htm

Welcome to the forum :)

It sounds like you have very realistic goals and are ready to make this happen!

To be honest I've always dismissed the BMI level to be a bit off for me as by it's calculations it seems to suggest I should be 13st! Which seems a bit unrealistic considering my frame size. Although I guess that could just be because I've convinced myself thats the case so it doesn't sound too daunting!

hiya and welcome to the forum.. I was overweight in school too and find today i want to change that and is what i am gonna do. its a struggle but i found thru this site i find the support i need gl to you and im rooting for u

The ideal weight calculator gives me what I consider a very low ideal weight. The BMI coincides with the weight I remember being happy with back in the day, about ten pounds heavier than the maximum recommended by the ideal weight calculator.

Hey guys i'm new, just looking for some support, i'm hoping to drop abou 30lbs and get rid of my "spare tire" so i can go to the beach again

Welcome on board!!

In my case (and plenty others) the most important thing to lose weight is the nutrition. I have lost 81.5 lbs (37 kg) in less then 6 months just by changing my diet. I know it drives people crazy what I am going to say now, and that is: I havent done any exercise the whole time, besides my job as a sales clerk in a petshop. My opinion and experience says that the food we eat is an absolute biggest factor in weightloss, simple as that. It is immensely important that you change your nutrition to get success in the weightloss. To lose weight just with exercise requires that you exercise many hours every day. To do moderate exercise few times a week to lose weight wouldnt work.

My opinion is also that in order to lose weight you shouldnt starve yourself. Try to eat plenty of low-calorie food (I eat 25-35 oz, 600-1000 grams of veggies every day) in order to get your metabolism in the highest burn. Cut down on the fat, but DONT eliminate it from your diet, because then you wont lose weight (I eat every day 0.7 oz of fat or oils plus the fat that can be in some of the food). Cut down on your bread (I eat 1-3 oz, 30-90 gr pr. day), and avoid ALL sugar and sweet things. It seems that sugar makes your metabolism slow plus all the other bad things it creates, both physically and mentally (you can read about it at this thread) http://weight-loss.fitness.com/showthread.php?t=3969

Good luck with your weightloss :)

I think personally I enjoy excercising at the gym. I find it's a nice release after a day at work & it helps me to get to sleep in the evening, so I'm not sure stopping completely would really work for me. It is sometimes difficult to find the time to go though.

I hear what you're saying about nutrition. I've actually stopped eating sugar snacks (chocolate, sweets etc.) completely and it definetly makes a difference. As for bread I do still eat it, however it's a lot less than I have in the past, and only granary breads as a pose to white etc.

I guess with these things theres never going to be one solution which works for everyone, as everyones different. :)

On the plus side, I weighed myself today and found out I was in fact 250.6lbs instead of 252lbs, nice surprise! :)
