Sport Tips/ hints for nutritious diet

Sport Fitness
I'm in desperate need of some good hints for a nutritious diet. I'm the only one in this house who WANTS to eat healthy, therefore my options on what there is in this fridge are limited.

However, with some help, I could pick up some items that would be just for me. I just don't know where to start.

I like to exercise, and I'm currently looking to lose my extra weight (which is around 20 pounds) but at the same time, tone up and gain some muscle.

Thanks ..

You mean that the rest of the household likes stuff like poutine?

You probably already know generally what is good:

Whole foods like vegetables, whole fruits, fish, beans, whole grains, lean meat.

And what is bad:

Added sugars and refined carbs, hydrogenated oils, foods high in both carbs and fats.

The less processed the food item is, usually directly equates to how good it is for you. Some things still require moderation though.

Whole meats (steak, beef roasts, ground sirloin, ground beef in moderation), chicken and turkey breast, lean pork, fish/shellfish, eggs...all good stuff.

fruits, veggies...good too, but watch the starchy stuff like potatoes.

whole grains...meaning you can see the grain...is good. Stuff like whole oatmeal, brown rice, pearled barley...good complex grains. Kashi also puts out several decent cereals.

you can basically steer clear of anything in a box, frozen dinners, and things that seem processed.

eating clean is actually cheaper than buying all the pre-processed stuff, though in the off-season fruit can be pricey, and chicken breast isn't the cheapest thing around either.

but its not expensive, that's for sure.
