Edit: The following information is purely educational so you can understand who I am, and how I eat. I'm not here to try to "brag" or anything.

I'm a "guy's guy". The leader of the pack in my social clique. I'm smart, good looking (would be, if I lost weight. I was that guy in highschool who got all the ladies, hell still can even with being 350+). The real guys guy.

I'm big into sports (if you can't tell from my name), a heavy smoker (have been for years, this is something I don't plan to cut until AFTER the weight, and even then I may still smoke - but will only be dropping cigarettes). A real beer and a game kind of guy.

I'm looking for snack ideas. I'm a pasta/bread/meat/potatoes kinda guy. I like good tasting food. I actually like most foods, but soft breads is the way to my heart (and/or heart attack. Haha). Please avoid anything with my few foods that I DON'T like: Mushrooms, olives, capers, jello. Everything else is fair game.

My wife is thin as a stick (in the belly, she's built in other areas. She's 5'4 and weighs about 110, but her belly is nonexistant!), and can really put the food away. She eats more than I do and I'm the fat one. We eat together, so I need healthy snacks that she and I can enjoy together.

wow, sounds like you think alot of yourself. Are you trying to impress us or ask for advice? I'm confused.

Yeah, I'm kinda not sure what you're asking for.

Guy, gal, whatever ... the idea behind weight loss is the same for everyone. Eat less than you burn.

I'd suggest you start with this: register for a free account on fitday.com or thedailyplate.com and start logging your food. You'll be able to see what you're eating, how many calories you're getting, where your nutrition works out. That'll give you an idea of where you can start cutting back or changing things to get the most nutrition while managing your calorie intake.

Very odd OP...

Anyway, as a guy here are a couple of snack things I do, pretty healthy other than sodium.

My biggest thing with snacking is portion control, so in many cases I find it easier to spend a little more money on a reduced size or 100 calorie packaging so I only grab one.

I really can't personally do anything in the bread/crackers/chips category, I just eat too much of it.

100 calorie packs of beef jerky
100 calorie packs of popcorn lightly sprayed with the butter spray
Microwave or steamer of edamame in shell, takes time to eat and pretty tasty
Small box of raisins
Fill a small condiment bowl with low fat cottage cheese
Can of tuna with a little salt/pepper and/or hot sauce
Powerbar

Not intending to be rude, but at 350+ I see your attitude and ego as one of the biggest problems likely standing in your way. You need to realize that it's going to take work and sacrifice to cut your weight, but it will be very worth the work!

Your wife can likely out eat you because her metabolism is probably raging. With the way you described your diet, what you are eating and likely when you are eating it make your metabolism much slower.

Start eating 5-6 small meals per day (~3-400 cals each). You will notice that your energy significantly improves because your blood sugar is more balanced through the day.

If you want to shed pounds, cut down on the pasta/bread/meat/potatoes.

An example of a day for you should be-

8 AM- Walk. I dunno if you can walk 2 miles or so, but try. Whey protein shake. 3 egg whites, one piece of dry toasted wheat bread. Even stone ground wheat if possible. Yes it's not "soft" but complex carbohydrates are the way to go.

10:30 AM- 10 carrot sticks and an apple.

1PM- Can of tuna seasoned with lemon pepper on a bed of greens with fat free italian.

4 PM: Tilapia filet (or small amount of chicken breast) You want a low fat high protein meat. Sliced turkey/chicken isnt bad. More veggies/fruits.

7PM: 2oz whole wheat pasta, 2 cups of broccoli, romano cheese and cayenne on the pasta.

9PM: GYM. Lift weights, maybe walk a mile. Whey protein shake.

After this go to sleep.

Beef is too fatty to be eating daily, and truly isn't good for you on a daily basis. Make sure that you incorporate an array of veggies and fruits into your diet.

Just my two cents.

Hi, SoxFan: :seeya:

You may not want advice from me (a fellow 300+ club member) but I have a few pointers that may help you to get started.

1. Start Slow.

Making tiny adjustments to your diet and activity level will ease you into a lifestyle change that is realistic to maintain. If there are dietary things that you do that are poor choices, start correcting them one step at a time. If you drink soda, start replacing it with water. If you don't, drink more water anyway (1oz. per every 2lbs. of body weight each day should be your goal) If you know you eat too many carbs (I know I do!), start replacing some of them with fruits and vegetables, or simple sources of protein. If you drink milk that has a high fat content, switch to 1% or Skim. Go for a short walk everyday.

2. Don't be focused on numerical results.

At least at first, pay more attention to the way your body and energy level are being affected by the positive changes you make in your diet and exercise. They will both be more meaningful and give you more motivation than a number alone.

3. Read Labels.

Start looking at the labels on everything you eat ... very importantly, focus on the serving size. Even if you're eating something healthy, ... too much of a good thing is still too much. Take milk, for example: at about 100 calories per serving, 3-5 glasses takes up a lot of "valuable caloric real-estate" in your daily consumption. I've come to some harsh realizations about my portion control in the last 3 weeks just from reading labels and finding out how much a serving of something actually is.

As far as snacks are concerned, some of my favorites are almonds, veggie chips, and any fruits. Whatever you choose, eat it very slowly and pay attention to every bite -- just being aware of your food brings so much satisfaction, you usually won't feel the need to have more than 1 serving of something. Logging your food is an extremely helpful tool, because it will allow you to see exactly which foods are too calorie-heavy to keep, which ones you should just cut back on your amount of, and which ones are better to increase in your diet. I use fitday.com, and it is really informative and hitting my calories properly while getting the proper amounts of nutrients has almost become like a daily game for me ... it keeps it interesting and fun (for me, anyway) and keeps me coming back to do it every day.

A couple of pieces of advice from an ex-smoker, ex-fat guy, and now diabetic. 1. Quit smoking first. That is MUCH more important for your health. 2. Get control of your weight before you become diabetic, like me. You will have to change from being a meat, potatoes, and pasta guy. Those foods are okay but in moderation. Replace the pasta with smaller portions of whole wheat pasta. Stop loading your potatoes up with butter, sour cream, and cheese, maybe switch to sweet potatoes. Cut out the junk food.

Having said that here are my favorite snacks:
-Nuts, like peanuts, almonds, mixed nuts, pecans, walnuts. But you can't sit there and eat a whole cup of them at a time, like you probably do now. Have one ounce.
-Fruit, a couple or three fruits a day
-Raw vegetables with hummus dip.
-Tortilla chips with salsa, in moderation. Maybe an ounce of chips at a time.
-string cheese made from part skim milk
-Popcorn. No butter. Spray with just enough oil to make the salt stick to it, and don't overdo the salt. You can sprinkle a little bit of cheese flavoring on it.

Sorry, that's the way it's gotta be.

Seems I accidentally offended some people here. The background information is because that's how I type, that's how I talk. I want people to be informed, letting them know why I'm asking, how I'm asking it. I do think highly of myself, that's because I'm very well accomplished. I make a ton of money, have a large home, more than one car and am not in the dreaded "middle class". Pointing those things out, however, was not my intention. My intention was to explain what KIND of person I am and what KIND of foods I like.

As for smoking, I will never drop smoking completely. I am a lobbyist for smoking, so I kind of need to smoke anyway. Cigars and pipes will always stay. After weight loss, I may work on cigarettes. However, with the difference as far as cancer ratio for non-smokers to smokers only being 7%, I don't really worry about the health impact that much. If you ever need useless information about cigarettes that they don't tell you in the media ads, just ask. =)

I guess I'll part my way here and take what little tips I actually ended up with. Thanks to those who did give those rather than focusing on the background information. I didn't, at first, include that that information was so people had some sort of idea of who I am, how I eat, as I figured it was not mandatory and people would just assume. I was wrong, and I'll go edit it in.

Sox,

Also being a well-off Alpha male, let me lay it right down on the line for you, brother. If you don't reduce your weight by a minimum of 150 lbs, you won't likely live past the age of 60. It'd be a damned shame if you built all that wealth and didn't live long enough to enjoy it yourself. Don't kid yourself: at 350+ lbs, the only reason your thin, sexy wife is still with you, or that you manage to get any sex on the side, is because of your money.

You want to lose weight and live longer? Drop the bread, pasta, and potatoes, period, full stop, cold turkey, forever. I'm not going to say anything about the cigarettes, because the excess weight will kill you long before the cigarettes will.

Peace,
AlphaX

Likewise being an Alpha Male, I can also tell you straight up that the ONLY secret to dieting is to eat less. You need to burn more calories than you eat. A net deficit of calories is the key. And at 350+ pounds, losing weight should be your main priority.

At that, you also need to eat the right things.

Since you have money, buy tuna steaks and eat them. Tuna is lean, and high in protein so will be very filling. Also eat lots of Tilapia and other white flaky fish. DONT fry them, go for seasoned and baked or george foreman'd :)

If you can't shake the simple carbs, eat whole grain pastas and brown rice. If you can wean yourself off them, that would be best.

Likewise if you can't cut the beef, at least chose LEANER cuts of beef and pork. For beef go with top sirloin/flank and tenderloin. For pork go for tenderloin also.

I'm sure you all picked up so much about me based on how I posted -_^

But yeah, I've dropped a lot of weight so far, and doing well. Again thanks to those of you who actually gave tips. Some of them are proving to be very helpful.

Actually, she and I have been together since we were 12. We had a stint when in my teens where I left her, dated around a bit for a few years, but we got back together. That was back when I was thin, and broke to boot. We've been together through thick and thin and are honesty in love. I'm sure she'd stay with me without my money. =)
