Time to do this - Who's with me?

Hi Guys,

It's good finding a website with like-minded individuals with a common goal, to get in shape.

I am a 26 year old male and I work in the telecommunications and networking industry. This means that 70% of my day is spent in front of a computer screen typing away and looking at pretty graphs and network diagrams.

I never though myself to be really obese, I always saw myself more chubby but after seeing some photos of myself lately I noticed that it's time to change.

I weigh 133 Kilograms and am +- 1.75 meters tall - sorry for those of you that don't use the metric system :)

So anyway, the breakdown is this:

  • I'm overweight
  • I'm very unfit (ever since working in network management I don't do any physical labour at all, my job has me sitting in an airconditioned office monitoring links and servers the whole day) This has been for four years now that I haven't done a single bit of exercise.
  • I love junkfood and Coca Cola (these were the first to go)

I am able to walk but it's always a drag and I'm very very exhausted after coming home from work in the evenings.

Who's got any suggestions for me based on your experiences? I would love your feedback and perhaps you're in the same boat as me. Wanting to get yourself in better shape. This is for me to be comfortable in my body (i.e. not get exhausted after walking 3 flights of stairs) and get in shape and be more active, and mostly for my 1 year old first born daughter, who is one very busy baby.

My plans are, which I've started since Monday morning, the following while I figure out what to do next:

  1. Drink a lot of water
  2. Eat no more junkfood
  3. Drink no more sugary drinks
  4. Take walks when possible
  5. Do situps and pushups (50 of each) every night

Although I have been slacking with the pushups (doing only 20 per night) I have managed to hold by my goals so far but not actually having an idea how to lose weight, as previously reiterated, I would love to have your inputs?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Hey Philip, I read through your post, and am happy to hear you're working on yourself! It's important to be healthy, and that takes proper food and exercise :)

If walking at night is a drag, would it be possible to get up a little earlier in the morning to do it then? Not only will you feel better throughout the day, but you will burn more calories doing it that route (since you're not going to sleep afterwards.)

If that's not an option, what are the big things making evening walks rough? Tired? Try to eat something healthy but a bit filling an hour or two beforehand.
Cold or have ill fitting shoes? Adjusting your wardrobe, putting on warmer clothing, proper fitting shoes will all affect the enjoyment of the walk.
You can also listen to a book on tape (mp3 etc.) listen to music, or just breath deeply and relax. While it may be hard now, you will get used to it and hopefully enjoy it more over time :)

Best of luck in your goals!

Hello, welcome to the forum! It sounds like you are definitely off to a good start. My biggest advice is to push through on the exercise. The first couple weeks will be rough as you get used to it, but if you can stick to it after a month you'll start to like it. Also, watch what you eat, but don't be so strict with yourself that you have a meltdown over one slip up.
