tight section on back side of leg (behind knee)

I have little knowledge of what actual body parts are, but does anyone know the two things (tendons? ligaments?) that run down the back side of your leg behind your knee? After a 5 miler on saturday mine were very tight, i tried to find a stretch to loosen them up but nothing seemed to isolate that area. I have sense just been doing the eliptical because it seems to not put as much stress on it but would like to get back into running. Anyone have a clue what i am talkin about?

is it the muscle above the back knee, or the two tendons on either side of the knee?

if its the tendons, you probably strained it.

Bump, flared up bigger than life today 4 miles into my run. Help! I dont really want to go to a doctor but i guarantee thats what you are gonna tell me to do.....

You may have a torn ligament or possible hamstring. Whatever, the case--go see a doctor! The condition will not go away as evidenced by the continous swelling after activity.

As a general rule.

"If it hurts when you use the muscle then just rest, its prob just a strain.
If it swells up go to your doc in case the problem is a more serious pain."

Catchy eh? I just made that up, seriously. Just off the top of my head.

well, this is my first day back from a week off of excersising. It was hurting back a week ago, and that was part of the reason I took a week off. So my first day back i reaggrivate it, guess its something more....

The ligaments in your knee are called anterior cruciate posterier crutiate medial ligament and Itb band. The area behind your knee is called the popleteal. By running with a slight lateral strike you can cause inflamation of this area.

I just ran 60 minutes (10,000 steps) on the eliptical and it didn't hurt one bit. I stretched out real good before and after, I may just keep doing this until my insurance kicks in in about a month....hahaha.

I was experiencing the same thing but only in my left leg. My gait is all messed up... one foot is straight (not like duck or pigeon).. the other like a duck... one foot pronates a bunch the other not much at all... one foot I heel strike the other I land in the middle of my foot... One foot is just under size 11 the other is 11 1/2... So anyways... enough of my whining...

The back of my left leg was bugging me (--edit-- back of left knee...) for a couple weeks... an experienced runner told me to just slow down a bit... run not so fast and don't push so hard... and rest a bit more... I kept running and just ran 9:30+ miles instead of 8:50's... and no last 1/2 mile all out running... I also added 2 days of rest after my long run...

I read this recently and it has helped me a bunch... If you got fit by excercising then you could just excercise non-stop for days on end and be the most fit in the world... BUT no! you would break down and not be able to do anything after a period of time... you become fit by recovering from excercise... the more you recover the more fit you become... look at it this way... assuming you havn't injured something... and that it is just sore from over use... then once you let it heal (recover) fully it will be stronger than it was before...

Good luck! OH one other thing... Pay attention to your sitting posture if you are an office worker... if you have a habbit of kicking your legs out... and crossing your legs at the ankles... so that one leg is completely locked out and straight and the other resting on top of it... that could be contributing to the issue...
