Thinking of quitting job

Hi there, im thinking of quitting my boring office job even thou i havent got another lined up. I have a couple of Gs saved up. And my lifesytle is inexpensive. Anyone think this is a good idea??? I have been thinking about it for a long time, and i just wanna live my life! I never hardly take risks so maybe its about time i did.

Any suggestions/views/theorys are all welcome

Thanks

Hmmm, so would you get another job in the near future? I suppose you do only live once, and taking risks.....why not!!!!!

And if you have some money to keep ya going and youve got an inexpensive lifestyle, i dont see why not.

The only risks i see, are getting another job later on, and being sure that you have got enough money ATM to keep you going! :)

I work in an office, if i could, id do the same. :D

Yeah im looking for another job like now, so i would spend a lot of time job hunting and also living life. Maybe play some sports, catch up with friends, stuff like that.

I wouldn't quit my job until I had another. You never know. A couple of grand doesn't give you much breathing room. I'd think about finding a job and telling them that you can start on X date, then take a vacation in the interim.

Yeah im trying to find another job but im not getting anyway and i dont think i will unless i devote more time to it, like i need more time in the week.
I dunno i proberly will stay on till i find another, its just i dunno what to do with my life anymore, lol

Id have to agree. I would never leave a job without knowing I had another one lined up. Even if I am running my own buisness I have not been un employed since I was 12.

Having a current employment history helps you get into jobs as well. When they ask you where you currently work it helps to be able to say you have a jo rather than you are in between jobs.

Thats just my opinion, it seems to hold pretty true where I live though.

$2000 would barely last me 2 weeks.

NEVER quit a job without having a job to go to. You are far more employable if you already have a job than if you don't. Employers want to know why you aren't working. It just doesn't look good ...

When you've saved a pile of dough, you can always ask to take a leave of absence with an employer if you want to kick back for a couple of months.

I don't know. Some people like having a life where they work sometimes and do not work other times.

For example, my wife's sister works in CG. She worked on the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and whatnot. She will find a job, save money, and quit. When she is not working she goes to places where the cost of living is low. She spent 6 months in Nicaragua this past year. $10,000 goes a long way in a place like that.

She also only owns a backpack full of stuff and a cell phone. So there are no expenses and she banks everything.

We have friends who are in jobs they can do anywhere, nail technicians, bartenders, they will live somewhere for a while, move to a town they think is cool, live there for a while.

Basically, besides the fact you have to eat, it depends upon what your lifestyle is. If you don't need a house, cars, and everything that goes with it, you really do not need to make much to have a good life and have extra money to do fun stuff.

I look at some of our friends and really think, "Man, they have it figured out." Since they do fun stuff a lot and do not have high stress jobs.

The flip side is that you may like a high stress job where you have to perform well. (personally I sort of thrive off of stress, it is when I have the largest sense of accomplishment and enjoy life)

So figure things out for you. There is obviously more than one solution. Since - "its just i dunno what to do with my life anymore" Start trying stuff.

Most people I have known have a lot of "I wish I would have done that." when they get older. I have never met anybody who said, "Man, I wish I would not have tried new things."

Just a different perspective that what you have gotten so far. What ever you do, make sure it fits what you want out of life.

I quit a job I had in Boston some years ago (boring corporate office type job) and spent the next three months driving cross country. It was the most awesome time I ever had! I threw a thin mattress in the back of my truck (with a cap on the truck) and slept in the back in good weather. I traveled very cheaply and ate cheaper, lol! But it was great fun!

It really depends on a lot of things, your age, any backup you might have (parents who would give you a place to hang your hat if you wind up unemployed for longer than you might want to be), and your future employment (you may have to explain to a future employer why you left this job). Where I'm living now, the economy is pretty down - not a lot of jobs. So getting another job quickly would prove difficult. When I came back from my cross country fun, it took me another 5 months to find a job. Thankfully the parents allowed me to live for free with them until something happened!

And what goergen1 says is so true. A lot of my friends are so jealous that I was able to visit 38 states including Alaska (I even went to Mexico for two days).

At the end of the day, the choice is yours, and like most, there is a lot to consider!

Enjoy

You only get one life. Live it how you want. For too many people a job is the ultimate life decision maker when really it should hold the least amount of weight IMO.

Thanks for all your input guys. I really appeciate it. I suppose there are those of us who are risk takers n those who like playing it safe, i suppose im on the pay it safe side, so i will probably keep to this job till i find another.

And wow dougp25 that must have been some avendture. Im thinking of going to America next year for about a month to tour round some parts of it. Its one of my dreams!

Well, I consider myself a risk taker, but I have my limits. I mean, unless you are just miserable and the stress is affecting your life, it just makes sense to stay, keep getting paid, and look over your options.

Yeah, you should come to America, so much great stuff to see. You'll love it!

find a job you can somewhat enjoy. i started into the work force in a very unhappy job and luckily was able to move on to a nicer one that i can enjoy.

sounds liek the perfect time to visit is now. otherwise you'll get another job that wont offer 1 month vacation and you'll have a reason why you cant.

Ive decided to not go down the pub so much. Im gonna go out and play sports more instead, so that will save me money.

You know, after reading some of the other comments, I think when it comes to work, I just don't think outside of the box anymore (I think owning property makes me a little more conservative).

There are some really good comments that are diametrically opposed to mine, and I thought "Hey, if I were in your shoes and I was still in my 20s, what would I do?"

I'd say "Screw it, I'm travelling." Because that's exactly what I did. I took a year off and travelled all over. I picked up odd jobs (i.e., slinging drinks, bartending) and made great tips so I had enough money to venture out and continue on my travels.

Well, you like in the UK, so our little financial crisis in the USA shouldn't directly affect your job hunt...but it might put a little squeeze on things. The world is watching adn probably a little wary of getting too far into bed with the USA, financially.

I would say to jacky there is more to life as a teenager then throwing up on a backpack and clocking up frequent flier miles. Talk with ure family are they in agreement/even aware of your plans?

Thanks again for the comments!

vaecicla - I dont really have much family around only my dad and brother, and they know im not happy/satisfied with my job. And i dont wanna travel for a long time or anything, say a month at the month as i would miss people i care about too much.

Except Britain is implementing their own bailout to the tune of $87B
