thinking about starting boxing

(I posted this in the Sports forum but nobody was answering)

i just started lifting weights and changing my diet etc, and at the same time my interest in boxing and kickboxing has grown due to programs like The Contender, Ultimate Fighter and UFC.

I'm considering joining a boxing or kickboxing club in my local area, but there's a few things I'd like to know first.
Firstly, I don't fancy fighting in competitions and trying to win medals and prizes, I'd rather just do it as a way to keep fit, have fun and fight people within my club and other clubs. Is it possible to do this or are coaches going to expect you to fight in competitions?

Also, (this my sound lame to people who do martial arts), are there any rules as far as punching and kicking to the nose is concerned? The reason I ask is because it's a really sensitive part of the face and I really don't wanna walk away from every fight with an injured nose. What are the rules or guidelines in terms of this (for boxing and kickboxing)? I noticed it doesn't seem to happen very often.

Be honest when you go in to talk to them. Let them know. Even if you don't want to compete - you can still be a valuable sparring partner.

If you get a good teacher it won't be an issue. You'll probobly start out without head shots and then when you do them, you'll have on headgear. WHEN you get hurt - it won't be sparring - it'll be doing something stupid (trust me).

you can lean your training more towards the physical fitness side if you discuss this with the instructor. and as pointed out above, you'll most likely be wearing head gear at first. boxing (and martial arts) can put you into incredible shape BTW, if you have a good class/instructor.

having done both sports for ~2years i would recommend kickboxing if u dont wanna get hurt. Sure a kick to the nose hurts...but constant battering from punches is worse. Although many kickboxers hardly kick. When u get good, you will WANT to fight in competitions. It gives u something to train for also. Just keep those hands up!!

theres also a good thing called boxerfit in some places like leisure centres. to be honest they absolutely kill you lol but in a good way. Its all the fitness of boxing without the fighting, you do punch bags, mitts, sprints, crunches and lots more. Its very good for fitness and quite cheap!!!

And it's probably illegal for your kickboxing clubs to force you to compete.
