Sport Think twice before eating flax!!! It might lower your testosterone levels!!

Sport Fitness
I stopped eating flax 2 months ago, because I heard that it contains a larger amount of phytoestrogens, which seem to lower test according to some.
Soy also has got phytoestrogens and that's the main reason why more and more people especially bodybuilders hate it. I can give you hunderds of anti-soy articles.
Well guess what?
Flax has even a higher number of phytoestrogens than soy.
Flax was administered to people who had cancer, and the flax slowed down the cancer BY REMOVING TESTOSTERONE from the body.
Here are parts of the study:

Flaxseed may slow growth of prostate tumors. Including flaxseed as part of a low-fat diet may slow the growth of tumors in men with prostate cancer. According to a study published in the journal Urology, 25 men with prostate cancer supplemented with 3 tablespoons of ground flaxseed daily for an average of one month had a greater rate of prostate tumor cell death than men who did not follow this diet.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among American men, excluding skin cancers. The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 200,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in the US in 2001.
Flaxseed contains a fiber-like compound, lignan, which is thought to bind to testosterone and possibly help remove it from the body. This could, in turn, help suppress the growth of prostate cancer cells. Testosterone stimulates prostate cancer growth. Several conventional therapies block androgens such as testosterone as a way to control the spread of cancer.

Here's the whole study

I'm in a hurry right now, I'm gonna check for some other stuides tommorow. See if it's really true

see if you can provide an explaination for this result scientifically from either peer reviewed articles or your own knowledge, the only molecular mechanism I can think of that would allow this result is that the phytoestrogen molecules bind up the dihydroxytestosterone receptors causing a desensitization resulting in a downregulation of the serum testosterone levels but i can think of multiple molecular reasons why flax could cause increased prostate tumor cell necrosis w/o the down regulation of testosterone (ie flax contians small amts of cyanogenic glucosides)

yeah but the flax keeps things clear enough so that its not messy getting to the prostrate. My honey told me so.

hahbahahhaa

did I say that out loud! hahahahaa

ok, time for bed...

hahahgaha\

IO mean sleep.

oh gawd... ahahahhaaja

OH! PLEASE......RELAX, and get more FACTS before AXING the mighty FLAX.

And, remember, brotha's.....

FLAX will pump the SLACKS to the MAX by allowing the prostate to do its powerful ACTS; therefore, disregard the ATTACKS and feel the power in the twin SACKS!

Oh.......he, he :)

what is it about flax? too much omega 6 or something?

No, but the phytoestrogens in it, which are claimed to remove testosterone from your body.

This is only one study, so I'm not saying stop eating flax because of it.
I'm not touching flax.. I'm much better of with fish and fish oil.

I'm gonna do a search for 'the effects on flax on the hormones', and also
'effects of phytoestrogens on hormones' later, do investigate this whole things thoroughly

here's the problem though. I've seen several studies that 'proved' flax seed oil increases prostate cancer in men.
i've seen just as many studies that 'proved' it LOWERS prostate cancer risk in men.

I've seen studies that say the phytoestrogens in Soy (and other plants) decrease test. levels in men.

I've seen just as many studies that 'proved' the human body doesn't treat phytoestrogens like animal estrogen, and that test levels didn't drop at all.

In other words, ONE PIECE OF RESEARCH MEANS JACK ****. You can screw with statistics to make them say just about anything. Unless multiple long term double blind placebo studies are done by an INDEPENDENT lab...

lets just say I've seen figures that claim 60% of all 'scientific studies' are flawed before they ever start, often slanted to produce the results that support the theory.

a.k.a. Bad Science.

that said, the human body isn't efficient at converting the ALA in flax seed oil to EPA and DHA omega fatty acids. fish oil is superior.

hell some people lack the enzyme(s) needed to convert ALA, so they're just crapping out a lot of un-used flaxseed.

I agree... this study is inconclusive.
I'm not taking any chances anyway, so I'm using only fish oil.

I think they can find out if flax lowers test (in short term), simply by getting a group of men who don't usually consume soy or flax (or any foods containing phytoestrogens) , and put them on a diet which contains a lot of flax. Do hormone tests before the start of the diet, and weekly throughout the whole diet for about 2-3 months..

Still there is a lack of studies... And different studies give different claims.
Well have to wait for some in-depth studies.
Also, If you hate soy.. you should hate flax even more. Because the phytoestrogens is the reason why people hate soy, and flax has got more phytoestrogens than soy.

Btw for everyone who is considering changing their diet or supplements bc of this article, I advise you to search to see what else has phytoestrogens. You'll be surprised.

I am not considering giving up the mighty flax. I will wait until next year, when another study specifies its better than taking viagra.

Please consider the "egg" flip flop over the years.

Oh...by the way, dont touch the apple either.....there are articles and studies that specifiy that it doesnt keep the doctor away.....it schedules one for you if you eat them.......

Best wishes :)

Yes, I have to agree, don't stop eating flax just because of my post, this topic needs more research. I'm not taking any chances, I'm not even touching flax, it wasn't a big part of my overall diet so it's not a big sacrifice. I'm taking fish oil instead

On a side note, several studies have shown that an excessive amount of phytoestrogens in developing boys will interfere with there hormonal development.

Here is a good read on FLAX from: John Berardi.com

Lately the media has been spending alot of time talking about "healthy omega 3 fats."

And it's about time!

Most people are woefully deficient - getting only about 1/3 of what's recommended.

However, as usual with media saturation, the finer points are often lost. For example, the following questions (and those like them) often go unanswered.

Are all omega 3s the same?

If I take flax, should I take fish oil - and vice
versa?

How much omega 3 should I take?

And so on...

Best wishes TO ALL!

Hope all of you are having a great day!
