Anybody seen the movie "Waiting"? Ewwww..... lol.

lol ? I'm confused...

Anyways, I just purchased my first Muscle and Fitness magazine, and they had a few pages based on exactly what you asked. I noted everything it said on some index cards, so I'll type up everything I read and noted.

Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)

Top Hideouts: Chinese food and Soy Sauces
Secret Hideouts: Commercial soup stock, bouillon cubes, and canned, processed and frozen meats.

Summary:
Inspires you to keep eating. MSG adds two flavors: salty, from sodium, and umami (meaty/savory taste). We get way to much sodium as it is and the flavor variety stimulates appetite and weight gain. Health risks include: bloating, fatigue, headaches, nausea and vomiting and other assorted afflictions.

Stick to foods with short ingredient lists and stimulate taste with herbs and spices.

Parabens

Top Hideouts: Soap, toothpaste, haircare products, deodarants and lotions
Secret Hideouts: Marinated fish products, salad dressings and processed vegetables

Summary: This group of chemicals has an effect similar to estrogen in the body which can lead to higher fat and lower muscle mass.

Look for the ingredients that end with "paraben".
ex: methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, beneylparaben, and avoid them.

Artificial colorings (Blue 1, Red 3, Yellow 6)

Top Hideouts: They're in about every colored candy you can imagine
Secret Hideouts: Soda's, cherry juice, fruit cocktail and some baked goods.

Summary: Blue 1 may be a mild carcinogen, Red 3 may be linked to thyroid tumors and Yellow 6 can cause allergic reactions.

"Avoid artificially colored drinks and candies"

Artificial Sweeteners (Acesulfame-K and Aspartame)

Top Hideouts: Anything that's sweet and says "sugar-free" like diet soda's, gum and candy.

Summary: Unbundling sweet taste from calories can interfere with the systems we use to gauge calorie intake. Artifically sweetened beverages will make you fat.

"Avoid soda altogether, Drink water, seltzer, mineral water, seltzer with fruit essance and tea"

High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS)

Top Hideouts: Found in about every process food but most notoriously soda, sweetened cereals, yogurt, cookies and ketchup.
Secret Hideouts: Foods that aren't sweet, such as breads, crackers, chips, spreads n' dressings.

Summary: HFCS can increase fat gain because it's more readily converted to fat in the body and doesn't trigger the normal cues that tell us to stop eating.

"This leads to overeating"

Trans Fats

Top Hideouts: Cookies, crackers, cake mix, frosting and commercially fried foods like doughnuts, french fries and onion rings.
Secret Hideouts: Low-fat foods, such as: dried soups, stick margarine, nondairy creamers, and fried fish n' shrimp.

Summary: Trans fats interfere with muscle growth and increase muscle breakdowns, Trans fats cause you to store fat and increase inflammation

"Look for partially hydrogenated oil"

Hope that gives you a good idea!

Just a suggestion.. rather than remembering all that, or trying to keeping it in mind.. I would print it out, and stick it where you could always refer back to it. I did, and I'm going to stick it right where my eating schedule, workout routine, and calendar is at.

Only joking... it's a movie about a waitstaff at this restaurant, and if you piss them off they'll spit (or worse) in your food.... when I read the title of this thread "what to watch out for in food" I didn't think of ingredients... lol
