The whole "muscle weighs more than fat" thing.

I have been working out - not too much, just enough - and reducing my calories by 15-20% of my maintenance for about two months. I notice my waistline has slimmed and my pants fit better so things are definitely changing. I can feel muscle under the skin in my legs and stomach and arms.

Is it true that muscle gain can stop the number on the scale from going down, even though fat loss is occuring? Could I have gained muscle that weighs a certain amount in exercizing for two months?

I'm reading avidly and know all about stalls... I do my rest days and my added calorie days, and am keeping record of calories in. I'm just curious as to why the needle won't budge but the waistline keeps looking better.

In short the answer is body composition can change dramatically with very little weight difference. I give you this as a perfect example. In this picture he only lost 5lbs of weight. I think it speaks for itself.

The best thing is to get yourself some skinfold calipers. Then you can measure directly that fat reduction that you are achieving and stop worrying about your weight.

LeighP.........do you happen to know what the time frame is on those pics? I would love to know how long that trasformation took. It really is amazing that there is only a 5 pound difference there.

BTW, you made your point beautifully! :)

wow...

Ditto from me, Leigh!

Where did you get those pictures from? Is there a similar one that shows the change for a woman?
