the US gov't does something RIGHT!!!!

All this does is force the government to dumb down their language and avoid using 'big words.' The only reason this was passed is because American people are stupid and have tiny vocabularies. So, us stupid Americans who don't pay attention in English class need to be talked to like we're ignorant 3rd grade children; otherwise we can't no understands dem simple words that there smarty pants be using on us.

That shouldn't make you proud to be an American; that should make you ashamed.

I disagree. Have you looked at the examples? Some of them are ridiculously cryptic. I also think it will make life much easier for lawmakers, and more importantly, cops, and it should also make less confusion in the courtroom and in the prosecutor's office.

I think that the more verbose and complex a law is, the more opportunity a lawyer has to try to wriggle through a loophole.

You could do that with anything though; pick out a few examples that lean towards the extreme left or extreme right side of a situation. But, that doesn't paint an accurate picture of how things really are.

Yes, the examples they listed are ridiculously difficult to comprehend and could've been simplified through 'every day' language, but let's be serious - I'm willing to bet a large portion of Americans don't know what most of the AVERAGE words used by the government mean (government offices, White House, Senate, court rooms, judges, police officers, etc).

There are a lot of brilliant people in this country, but there are waaaaay more Larry the Cable Guys filling up the states. And, it's because of them that we have to dumb everything down. I mean, we live in a country where restaurants need to put "Caution: CONTENTS ARE HOT" on cups of coffee for fuck's sake. THAT'S how stupid we are.

I'd suggest improving education to make it easier for people to understand, rather than simplifying everything. Just a thought.

Unfortunately, our culture has changed to the point where we (Americans) don't care about education. You have to want to be educated before you can be educated. And, since our culture is full of kids who don't want to or don't care to be educated, improving the quality of education in this country isn't going to solve the problem...because the kids still aren't going to care.

And, as generations pass, we are going to have to continue to dumb down everything just so our stupid idiot citizens can understand things. It's already sad, but eventually it's going to REALLY sad.

I love my country, but I will never pretend like it's not full of stupid people.

Perhaps, Chef, YOU are the problem for not trying to fit in or just understand the common man. Sometimes very smart people have this problem, it makes them cynical and angry. This country, and every country is technically full of stupid people because the law of averages simply dictates this. If you learn to accept was is and not what SHOULD be you'll live a much happier life.

On the other hand, I'd prefer not to have figure out a word problem every time I look at a law either.
I also believe that it DOES take talent and intelligence to write simply and clearly.

Picking up a dictionary solves the problem. Paying attention in school solves the problem. And, the problem isn't me - it's stupid people.
