The Saggy Skin Myths?

Hello everyone!

I'm about to undertake losing 6-8 stone.

I've heard so much about loose skin during and after weight loss. Everything from 'That's a myth, it tightens up,' to 'Loose skin made my life hell, I was better off fat.' I don't think you could be better off overweight, though, for the health risks all though loose skin has to be a depressing factor, and irritating too.

I know it changes on factors like how fast you loose weight, how much you do exersise and how old you are. I am 20, so hopefully my skin is still pretty elastic-y.

I'm wondering if it is myths, or true? How much it varies? People's expirience? Expert's views? If you keep exersising will the skin just tighten up or sag there forever? Do any of the highstreet creams like Peptides, Skintight, Cellex-C etc work? Would it be better to use a water-based hydrating cream of some simple skin firming cream? Or natural remedies?

Any information or expiriences really. C:

skin is an organ. if you're really overweight, it really has nowhere to go but collapse in on itself... you can't just 'shed' parts of organs.. now granted there is some elasticity and the skin can stretch and shrink, but as you get bigger and bigger, eventually your skin just grows...

if you're just mildly overweight, you should be fine. it's normally the 100+ lbs losers that worry about loose skin..

I am also concerned about this as I will be losing 95 pounds by the time I reach my goal.

Everything I've read seems to suggest it's a combination of genetics, and

1. The younger you are the better
2. The shorter the time period you were overweight the better
3. The slower you lose weight the better
4. The more you do muscle building exercises the better
5. Important to drink a lot of water and use moisturizer
6. Important to eat enough protein and other nutrients
7. (And obviously how fat you are to begin with.)

I've been losing so far 2-3 pounds a week, I know for ideal skin recovery that is too fast. So far I don't think I have loose skin, though my belly button looks somewhat saggy to me.

I am thinking of slowing down my weight loss to 1 pound a week and doing a lot more muscle builders. This is a struggle for me, because I would love to drop the weight quickly. But I know that it's better to be fatter longer than to have loose skin afterwards, because surgery is expensive, scary, and leaves scars.

I don't know about creams specifically, but I've read good reviews about Bio Oil.

I'm 53 and have lost 3 stone so far and have another stone to lose. The sagging isn't too bad except a bit on the stomach so at 20 years old I think that it shouldn't be very noticable. You probably won't have such perfect skin as somebody that was never overweight but the weight loss will more than compensate for that.

Hi there,

I lost 100lbs over a 2year period. Now at my target weight (130lbs at 5feet6), I'll be honest with you. My abdominal area is flat, I have a mild 6 pack (after 2 kids, not bad), but the area around my navel is absolutely revolting. Basically you cannot see my navel, the skin above collapses around it. I hate it so much. And you can pull it out and make shapes with it and stuff.

Lets not even begin discussing my boobs...I was a 40 EE, now a 34 B, but oh my god, lets just say....I need surgery.

To be fair, the rest of me is acceptable, apart from a few wobbly ass issues, despite all of the hard training.

But one thing is for sure, I prefer this to the horror that I was 100lbs ago.

I personally lost weight at a rate of 4lbs a month. However, when I got to my target (which I have now maintained for 6 months), my face apparently looked "loose". Now 6 months later it looks firmer. (also thanks to anti ageing creme).

So when you do get to your target, obvsiouly you will look great, but you need to maintain it for a while to let your skin recover. And to be honest, I did not bother with creme. I find the whole body-creming event before bedtime so heinously dull. I tried it for 2 weeks with Shea Butter creme but I hated it, my husband hated it, and I broke out in shocking night sweats, having lathered myself in this crap.

I think a good healthy diet, regular exercise and lots of water will help your skin recover.

Personally, I'm giving the skin issue another 2-4 years. If it hasn't gone away by then, by which time I'll be 36, then I'll opt for surgery. I have already started a "Boob Jar", to collect money for the job. I guess I'll have to start a "Navel Jar" too.

Good luck with your journey.
