I do the 2-mile for Cross-Country at my school, and I have a general program I do. Running long distances is mental first, and physical second. A runner who can pace him/herself well will be highly successful. I have a treadmill at my house and what I do, which should be easier for the 1 mile because it's much shorter, is go with a pace (treadmill speed) for a set time.
You're going to have to do some pretty basic math to see what speed you're going to have to maintain to get the time you want. If you practice daily running at the pace you determined (for instance, you want to run a 5:50 mile, work out what your average mph. speed is going to have to be, then set your treadmill to go at that speed).
It'll become second nature with enough practice, as long as you don't try to go gung-ho and sprint 5,280 feet, to maintain that pace.
