The mile

Do any of you fellas, and ladies :), have any good tips about getting a good mile time? I am guessing just training for it like anything eles, but is there any specifics i can do that can help improve my training.

Thankyou

What is your mile time, as of now?

I do the 2-mile for Cross-Country at my school, and I have a general program I do. Running long distances is mental first, and physical second. A runner who can pace him/herself well will be highly successful. I have a treadmill at my house and what I do, which should be easier for the 1 mile because it's much shorter, is go with a pace (treadmill speed) for a set time.

You're going to have to do some pretty basic math to see what speed you're going to have to maintain to get the time you want. If you practice daily running at the pace you determined (for instance, you want to run a 5:50 mile, work out what your average mph. speed is going to have to be, then set your treadmill to go at that speed).

It'll become second nature with enough practice, as long as you don't try to go gung-ho and sprint 5,280 feet, to maintain that pace.

last year it was 5:23, but i've continued to run since so who knows now

Not bad at all, considered the average American has trouble completing in under 8-10minutes.

Unless you are competing in long distance running or track competitions id focus on maintaining that time, Their really is little point in doing it faster unless you are trying to compete.

But none the less, if you want a better mile time. Go for a better two mile time.
Focus on the two mile run for about a month and record your total time then after a month of running two miles, try the mile again. Make sure you have plenty of fluid and had a day off prior to running it.You should (if training in the two mile hard enough) shaved quite a number of seconds off your mile time.

EDIT
Once your body becomes used to the two mile start on the three mile. the faster your time in the longer distances the faster in the shorter distances. Trust me this strategy works a lot better then just repeating the one mile daily
Once i followed the strategy i gave you i was able to complete the mile in 4:25.
